The Dean looked at her sharply, as though weighing her resolve. "Are you sure about this? Once you take responsibility, everything…"

Jessica nodded. "I will sign," she repeated firmly. Quickly, she scribbled her signature on the paper.

The Dean's eyes softened. He glanced down at the form before muttering, "We aren't certain the child will survive… but I'll do everything I can."

Jessica's lips curved into a brave smile. "Dean, I trust you to keep them alive."

For a brief moment, his hand faltered over the pen, then he gave a firm nod and turned back inside.

The doors swung closed, leaving Jessica and Davis alone in the quiet corridor.

"Do you think they will be fine?" Jessica asked, with trepidation raging in her heart.

"I believe they will, but we can only wait to find out," Davis murmured.

A few hours later, Linda was wheeled out of the theatre, her body pale due to loss of blood. Her baby referred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
