Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: Specialized Training

Once again, Kaka faced off against Squirtle in battle, and unsurprisingly, it ended in a crushing defeat. Even though Kaka could perceive his opponent's weaknesses, Squirtle—now aware of this—avoided close combat entirely, keeping its distance and wearing Kaka down with Bubble. This was the most effective strategy against him.

Before long, Kaka was completely exhausted by Squirtle's ranged attacks. The battle concluded with a final Water Pulse.

Gabriel watched the match from the sidelines, feeling somewhat helpless. Throughout the battle, neither Elle nor he had issued any commands—it had been purely a test of the Pokémon's individual strength.

There was no denying it: Kaka's stamina was far too weak. Even an unevolved Squirtle could dominate him with ease. If Squirtle wished, Kaka wouldn't even get the chance to close the distance.

"Well? I won this match."

Elle looked at Gabriel with a calm expression, though the slight curve of his lips betrayed his true emotions.

he was proud—rightfully so.

Gabriel, however, remained serious as he observed Kaka. The Farfetch'd lay on the ground, struggling to stand, looking as though he might collapse at any moment.

"Kaka has too many weaknesses. Farfetch'd aren't exactly built for battle to begin with. Compared to Squirtle, his combat experience is severely lacking, and his physical conditioning is weak. His entire body is practically one giant weak spot."

Hearing Gabriel's evaluation, Kaka lowered his head in shame. He had felt it too—throughout the match, he couldn't even touch Squirtle. His ranged attacks were ineffective, and he had become nothing more than a target for Squirtle's Water Gun.

Gabriel crouched down and patted Kaka's head.

"Don't lose heart. There's no such thing as an inherently weak Beast (Pokémon). Even you can become strong. But to do that, you'll have to endure a lot of hardship. Are you ready for that?"

Kaka's eyes burned with determination. He had never feared hardship. All he wanted was to change his fate. Who said a Farfetch'd couldn't become powerful?

Seeing this, Gabriel nodded. Though Kaka was weak now, his resolve to improve was rare. Under proper training, Gabriel was confident that Kaka would grow significantly stronger.

"That's enough training for today. Tomorrow, I'm heading to Jindu Gym. Kaka needs a proper training environment. Training like this isn't helping him improve much."

Nearby, Dratini perked up in surprise. They were going out? He wasn't too keen on that idea.

What should he do? Dratini had completely embraced the life of a stay-at-home dragon!

"No way. You're coming with me this time. You've been resting long enough. You're joining this special training, too."

"Muu~?" (Why do I have to go too?)

Dratini looked at Gabriel in disbelief. He was already strong! Why did he need extra training?

"Think about it—without relying on Dynamax energy, how likely are you to defeat Pat's Scyther? And Bai Le will only continue to get stronger. If you slack off now, that Scyther will return for revenge, and if you lose, it'll be embarrassing."

At the mention of pat's Scyther, Dratini's expression grew serious. Even with Dynamax energy, he had only barely won that battle. Now, after all this time, that Scyther had likely grown even stronger. He couldn't afford to stagnate—he needed to train properly, or else he'd lose miserably when the time came.

The next day, Gabriel arrived at Jindu Gym bright and early with Dratini and Kaka in tow. Upon seeing Gabriel's determined expression, the Vespiquen guarding the gym panicked, rushing inside to alert Everette.

"Why did you suddenly come running to my gym without telling me first? You scared Vespiquen half to death."

"I came for a reason. By the way, how's the situation with Jindu Academy?"

At the mention of Jindu Academy, Everette's expression turned sour.

"What's wrong? Is there a problem? Did Roland make things difficult for you?"

Gabriel looked at Everette with curiosity. Roland should have welcomed him—after all, Everette had the skills of a Gym Leader, making him a valuable asset anywhere.

"No, Roland was more than happy to have me. The issue is that the higher-ups won't let me resign from my position as Gym Leader."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

Everette looked somewhat embarrassed as he explained the situation to Gabriel.

"Jindu Gym doesn't have a designated successor right now. If I resign, there's no one to take over. So, for the time being, I have to stay on as Gym Leader until a replacement is found."

"You're telling me there's a shortage of Gym Leaders? Isn't that a job people would compete for?"

Everette's face grew even more awkward as he hesitated before answering.

"Well, this is Gym we're talking about. There's a massive financial hole here. Aside from the funds allocated for artifact preservation, I also owe some debts. No one wants to take over this money pit."

Gabriel shot him a look of disdain. This was entirely his own doing.

"But at least Roland is letting me take on a secondary position at Jindu Academy. I'll still be able to use their funding to continue my research on Dynamax energy. That won't be affected."

That was all that mattered. Dratini's growth depended on Everette's research.

"Anyway, I didn't come here to talk about this today. Does Jindu Gym have any training equipment?"

Everette looked at Gabriel in confusion.

"Training equipment? Not really. Are you planning to do some specialized training?"

Gabriel released Kaka from his Poké Ball, presenting him to Everette.

"I just caught this Pokémon (Beast), but he's quite weak. I want to put him through special training. If there's no equipment, then never mind."

As expected of a Gym Leader, Everette immediately noticed something unique about Kaka.

"A Farfetch'd? But there's something different about him."

Gabriel grinned.

"This guy isn't an ordinary Farfetch'd. Kaka has a unique psychic talent, making him highly capable in battle."

Gabriel nodded. He could sense that Kaka was different. The world was vast, and Pokémon with unique abilities weren't unheard of.

"If you're looking to train, there is a place in Jindu Gym that should be perfect. Follow me."

Gabriel frowned in confusion.

"I thought you said there was no training equipment?"

"I wasn't talking about equipment."

Everette led Gabriel deeper into the gym until they arrived at a peculiar-looking room.

"This is the place. I use it to train my Vespiquen. It should be more than enough for your Farfetch'd."
