Volume 2 Chapter 73: Smoke, Crystals, and Battle (Part 2)

Bang!

The sound of a hand slamming onto a table.

Crash!

The sound of a cup falling to the floor, shattering into pieces.

"Forty of them?! How is that possible!"

"That's impossible! Only two killed after such an explosion?!"

"No way! Absolutely no way! Recalculate everything again!"

Voices of astonishment and outrage filled the shelters across East Asia and the rest of the world.

Officials and military personnel couldn't believe the numbers—they couldn't fathom how the Ghidorah's Wings had sustained so little damage.

A super explosion capable of devastating cities within a 200-kilometer radius, combined with the detonation of thousands of nuclear warheads, had only resulted in such minimal casualties. It was unfathomable!

But the fact remained, no matter how hard they tried to deny it. Even after re-analyzing the images and recounting repeatedly, the number stayed the same: 40.

The 40 surviving Ghidorah's Wings circled arrogantly in the skies above the crater their impact had created, as if mocking humanity, as if silently ridiculing human overreach.

Yes, humanity had done its best—gone to the very limit of its capabilities. But…

What was the point?

The East Asia Monster combat command base fell into utter silence. No one could comprehend how this plan, which had seemingly gone off without a hitch, could result in such meager damage to the Ghidorah's Wings.

Had the plan failed, had the monsters landed somewhere without buried nuclear mines, their survival rate might have been understandable. That would have simply been a tactical failure—a reminder that humanity might still have a chance if the right strategies were applied.

But now... The tactics had succeeded. The monsters landed exactly where the nukes were buried, and yet…

It didn't matter.

Tactics had worked, but they were useless.

This undeniable reality showed one thing: humanity was now up against something far beyond its own comprehension.

Monsters.

Some recalled the scene from the live broadcast days earlier. After Godzilla's victory in the Far East, it unleashed terrifying rays, incinerating Hokkaido before their eyes.

Lifeforms that defied human understanding—that was what it meant to face monsters.

Now, these Ghidorah's Wings were no different.

The fight against monsters had begun.

At this point, East Asia's defensive network had been reduced to a single line of defense.

On the other hand, the enemy still retained 90% of its forces. And even of the casualties inflicted, only a quarter to a half could be attributed to humanity's efforts.

How was this battle supposed to be fought?

Could humanity even win?

No matter how much they wanted to deny the reality, the truth was inescapable. Forty Ghidorah's Wings were alive and well after the fireball of a 5-billion-ton explosion.

Humanity, regardless of its disbelief, had to face the truth: 40 Ghidorah's Wings now hovered above East Asia.

They soared high, their membranous wings slicing through the air. Their bodies emitted high-speed jets of gas from various points, combining wing flaps with jet propulsion to stay aloft.

On Venus, where atmospheric density was much higher, the Ghidorah's Wings didn't need large wings to fly. On Earth, however, the thin atmosphere made flight impossible without the aid of jet-like propulsion.

This added an infernal intensity to the already molten and lava-filled impact crater. In a way, these creatures resembled the mythical golden-winged beasts of legend.

The entire world watched through satellites, monitoring the movements of these 40 monsters. What would they do next? Would they wander aimlessly, as their counterparts had done earlier? Or would they, like Godzilla, begin a campaign of destruction?

The choice would determine humanity's fate.

Under the watchful eyes of humanity, the 40 Ghidorah's Wings, wingspans nearly a kilometer wide, finally made their move.

They split into four groups, each heading in a different direction. Moving at subsonic speeds, they resembled four golden clouds drifting away from the crater.

As they soared over mountains and forests, no immediate interception was possible.

The nearest railguns were hundreds of kilometers away, and the shockwaves from earlier explosions, along with debris launched into space, had temporarily disabled nearby nuclear satellites.

East Asia's defenses were on high alert, tracking the monsters' every move, desperately trying to analyze their behavior and devise new tactics to counter them.

Officials had even steeled themselves to deploy the Oxygen Destroyer, blanketing the entire region if necessary.

But amidst this tense observation, one group of ten Ghidorah's Wings began descending from their 10,000-meter altitude.

They flew lower, dropping to 3,000 or 4,000 meters, their wings adjusting slightly to control their direction.

The monsters seemed to have made a decision. Their long necks stretched forward, gazing at a burning human city ahead of them.

The city, its skyscrapers already leveled by earlier shockwaves and earthquakes, was ablaze. Combustibles had been ignited by the thermal radiation from the explosions. Though not entirely destroyed, it was in a half-ruined state.

As the city burned, the ten descending Ghidorah's Wings began to glow. Bright light emanated from their long necks.

And then—-

Beams of light shot forward, piercing through the atmosphere.

The beams struck the ground, erupting into explosions. Entire blocks of still-standing low-rise buildings were sliced in half by the energy beams.

The monsters swept their beams across the city, unleashing wanton destruction. They were stoking the flames, adding fuel to the inferno.

The situation was unfolding exactly as humanity had feared.

These 40 Ghidorah's Wings weren't here to simply fly around aimlessly. Their purpose was clear, much like Godzilla's.

They had come to destroy the world.
