Chapter 28 - Locked up

Kate

Click.

The police detective shut the door on his way out, leaving me with Riley's attorney. I quietly sat down.

"Here." Daisy slid the brown envelope to me.

Inside the envelope was a notice of my termination from work as Xavier's personal assistant.

I scoffed. "I expected this."

"My client will not be dropping the charges against you nor will she reach a settlement agreement with you."

"Then, what happens to me?!"

"You'll serve your time in jail, obviously. You really should've thought things through before targeting my client."

Daisy chuckled before exiting the room. The police detectives quickly led me back to the temporary holding cell.

I clenched my teeth, frustrated that I would end up spending some time locked up in prison. I could only hope that with Josh as my defense attorney, maybe I wouldn't have to be locked up for too long.

Two weeks later.

Never in a million years did I think that I would one day be locked up in prison for the crime of attempted manslaughter, serving for 7 months.

"Inmate 756! You have a visitor."

Just great. I begrudgingly made my way to the visitation room.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, taken aback with his presence.

He chuckled. "What do you think? I'm here to make you an offer. Take a seat." I did as I was told, seating in front of him. "I can make sure that you get out of here unscathed, because as it stands, things aren't looking too great for you."

"What do you mean by that?"

"They're soon going to obtain an arrest warrant for you."

"For what? I'm already serving my time for what I did."

"Don't pretend to be naive. You'll end up getting arrested for killing your mother."

Silence enveloped the room. I clenched my hands tightly.

"That's not possible. Even if what you're saying is true, they sure as hell will arrest you too!"

Derrick chuckled. "We both know that I was just a spectator. I wasn't the one who pulled the trigger." I was fuming. "So, what do you say? Do you want my help?" He smirked.

"What's the catch?"

"It's simple. All we have to do is pin all the blame on poor little Josh."

"What?! No! I'm not going to betray him."

Derrick shrugged. "Then, you'll leave me with no choice. You'll be the one spending the rest of your life in prison instead of that Josh guy."

"...."

"I hope you make up your mind quickly. Coz I'm gonna make the same offer to Josh in a little while." He got up from his seat, Weyd opening the door for him. "I can only save one of you."

My heart was beating frantically against my chest. So, it's gonna be me or Josh who'll end up going to jail? What kind of messed up dilemma have I gotten myself into?

"Wait!" I called out to him. "If I agree to this..."

He smirked, turning around to face me. "You won't ever have to worry about anyone finding out that you pulled the trigger on your own mother."
