"Do you need help with that?"
I startle, almost dropping the weight on my arms as someone speaks behind me, shrouded in the dark. I narrow my eyes, looking at the figure approaching me, and when they step into the light, I exhale.
"Josie, you startled me. Why are you in the dark?"
She shrugs, smiling before she looks at Andre, who I am carrying bridal style, fast asleep. "Is he drunk?"
"Yeah, he is a lightweight. Didn't pace himself at all," I chuckle, adjusting my hold on him, so that his face is now pressed on my neck, body much closer. I don't want anyone looking at him in such a vulnerable state, even her.
"So what were you doing hiding under the dark staircase anyway?"
"Got bored and decided to take a breather. Plus, it's fun just watching and listening to people when they think they are alone."
Weird. "I'm headed home, so you can leave whenever," I start walking away, but she stops me.
