Chapter 2 - ..

The night was quiet—too quiet. Ash stood on the balcony of their dorm room, staring out at the sprawling academy grounds below, the moonlight casting a silvery glow over the vast expanse. The towering buildings of the Supernatural Academy loomed in the distance, their lights flickering like distant stars. The academy was alive, but for Ash, it felt eerily empty. The weight of the prophecy he'd overheard from the headmaster's lips hung in his mind. "You are not alone. Trust your companions..."

His thoughts were interrupted when the door to the dorm room opened behind him with a soft creak.

"You're still up?" Kael's voice was rough from sleep, but there was a playful edge to it, as always.

Ash turned to face his twin, his golden amber eyes meeting Kael's crimson gaze. There was an unreadable expression on Ash's face as he crossed his arms over his chest.

"I'm just thinking, Kael. About everything. About why we're here." He motioned toward the academy, his gaze distant. "The headmaster said there's more at play here. We were chosen, Kael. Chosen for something... bigger than this war. But what is it?"

Kael walked over to him, his massive frame seemingly filling the room as he stood next to Ash, gazing out over the academy's landscape. Kael was a force of nature—werewolf and dragon, the perfect storm of power and primal instincts. While Ash wrestled with the conflict inside of him, Kael only saw the world as a battlefield, a place where strength and honor ruled.

"I don't know, man." Kael's voice softened for just a moment, before returning to its usual, easygoing tone. "But whatever it is, we're in it together. You're my brother. I've got your back, no matter what."

Ash let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. It wasn't like him to be vulnerable, but Kael's simple reassurance always made him feel a little lighter. Maybe it was the bond they shared, the kind that only twins could understand.

"We've always had each other's backs." Ash nodded slowly. "But... we're different, Kael. Do you ever wonder why? Why we got these powers? Why we're hybrid systems? I can feel it inside of me, like a tug of something... like I'm connected to something I can't even name."

Kael smirked. "You're always the one with the deep questions. Look, I don't know what's going on, but if anyone can figure it out, it's us. We'll get through this like we always do." He bumped Ash's shoulder with his own, his usual grin back in full force. "We'll figure it out, then maybe have some fun along the way."

Ash chuckled, despite himself. "Fun? In this place?"

But before Kael could respond, a loud knock on the door interrupted them.

"You two awake?" came a voice from the other side. It was Violet, their long-time friend and one of the academy's most talented students. With her soft, yet authoritative tone, Violet had always been the one to keep Ash and Kael grounded when things got chaotic. Her wings, pale and delicate, were always the first thing Ash noticed whenever she entered a room.

"Come in, Violet," Ash called out.

The door swung open, and Violet stepped inside, her expression serious.

"We've got a problem," she said without preamble, her eyes scanning the room. Her silver-white hair shimmered as she moved, and her phoenix energy, similar to Ash's but with a gentler touch, flickered around her like an ethereal aura.

Kael raised an eyebrow. "A problem? At this hour?"

Violet looked between them both, her gaze lingering on Ash for a moment longer than necessary. "I overheard something during my training today." She paused, glancing outside to make sure no one else was listening. "I've been hearing rumors about a group of rogue system-holders. They're not here to train or fight the Xorth. They're here for... something else. Something more dangerous. They want to use hybrid systems like you for their own agenda."

Ash's breath hitched, a shiver running down his spine. "Hybrid systems?" He had always known that their existence—half-vampire, half-phoenix for him, and half-werewolf, half-dragon for Kael—was rare, but hearing that there were people targeting hybrids for some dark purpose sent a new wave of unease through him.

"How do you know this?" Kael asked, his voice serious now.

Violet crossed her arms over her chest, her wings folding neatly behind her. "Because I met one of them. And they're not afraid to show their power."

Ash felt a surge of anger bubble inside him. These people, whoever they were, weren't just targeting them because of their powers—they were targeting them for the dangerous potential hidden in their blood.

"What are we going to do about it?" Ash asked, determination hardening his tone.

Violet looked at both of them with intensity in her eyes. "We're not waiting around to be attacked. We need to find out who these people are before they get any closer. I'll help you, but we'll need to be careful. They won't be easy to track, but I've heard whispers of them organizing near the northern border of the academy grounds."

Kael cracked his knuckles, a grin tugging at the corner of his lips. "Finally, something to sink my teeth into." He turned toward Ash, his red dragon eyes lighting up with a fierce fire. "Let's find these guys, put an end to whatever game they're playing."

Ash stared at his twin, feeling the warmth of his phoenix side pulsing within him. "I'm with you, Kael. We'll figure this out. And we'll uncover the truth behind why we're different."

Violet gave a knowing smile. "Then let's go before they find us first."

The three of them left the dorm room and headed toward the northern part of the academy. The academy grounds were sprawling, and the darkness of the night added an extra layer of danger to their mission.

The air around them seemed to crackle with an unspoken energy, like they were about to step into something far larger than they had ever anticipated. But Ash wasn't afraid. Not with Kael by his side. Not with Violet, whose fiery determination matched his own.

They'd faced enemies before—aliens, monsters, and gods—but this time, it felt different. The world was about to reveal its darkest secrets. And whatever the future held, Ash knew that with his twin by his side, he was ready to face it.
