Chapter 3 - 3

The northern border of the academy grounds was bathed in darkness, the towering trees casting long shadows as the trio made their way through the dense forest. The air was thick with tension, the hum of magical energy swirling around them like an unseen force. Ash could feel it most keenly—an electric, charged atmosphere that seemed to beckon him deeper into the night. His vampire side thrummed with anticipation, while his phoenix nature burned, eager to face whatever lay ahead.

Kael, ever the optimist, was clearly enjoying the night. His senses, enhanced by both his werewolf and dragon heritage, were alert, his every step as silent as a predator stalking prey. His crimson eyes darted to every movement in the shadows, scanning for threats. Even his usual carefree smile had been replaced with a steely focus.

"You feel that?" Kael's voice was barely above a whisper as he leaned closer to Ash.

Ash nodded, his own senses now on high alert. "Yeah. Something's not right here. It feels... wrong. Almost like the forest itself is watching us."

Violet, who had been walking in front, glanced back with a sharp look. "That's exactly it. I've been through this area before, but tonight... something's off. I don't think we're alone."

They continued onward, the rustling of leaves underfoot the only sound besides their breathing. As they ventured deeper into the woods, the faint sound of voices reached their ears—low murmurs, barely audible, but unmistakably human. Ash's heart quickened. "That's them, isn't it?"

Violet's silver-white wings twitched, her eyes narrowing. "It has to be. Let's move quickly."

They quickened their pace, slipping past the dense foliage, until they came to a small clearing. The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting a pale glow on the scene unfolding before them. There, in the center of the clearing, stood a group of figures, their faces partially obscured by hoods. The air around them shimmered with strange energy—dark, volatile magic that felt entirely unnatural.

Ash's heart clenched. There were at least five of them, all standing in a circle, and in the center of the circle was a massive, glowing crystal, its pulsing light flickering like a heartbeat. The crystal was something Ash had never seen before. It was a dark, obsidian-black stone that seemed to absorb the light around it, with veins of red running through it like veins of blood.

"What the hell are they doing?" Kael muttered, his voice low but edged with anger. He was already prepared to shift into his werewolf form, his muscles coiling with barely contained power.

Violet stepped closer, her wings barely a whisper against the air. "I don't know, but I don't like the looks of that crystal. It feels... familiar."

Ash's vampire side surged at the sight of the crystal, the urge to destroy it rising within him. But his phoenix side pushed back, its flames flickering in warning. He couldn't rush in. They needed to figure out what was happening first.

He motioned for the group to stay quiet and crouch low behind a nearby tree. "Let's watch and listen for now. We need to know what they're up to."

The three of them huddled together, their breathing quiet as they observed the ritual unfolding in the clearing. One of the hooded figures—a tall, gaunt man with long, white hair—stepped forward, raising his arms toward the crystal. His voice rang out in a guttural chant, the words foreign, alien to Ash's ears. But he could feel the weight of the power in the air, the way the magic pressed down on him like a heavy stormcloud.

"We are the children of the old gods, bound by blood and power," the man chanted, his voice echoing in the night. "This is our birthright, and it is time for the blood of the hybrids to awaken."

Ash's eyes widened. "The blood of hybrids?" He muttered under his breath. His mind raced. Was he talking about them? About Ash and Kael?

Violet's eyes darkened as she gazed at the crystal. "I knew it. They're after your blood, Ash. Kael... your blood too. They think they can use your hybrid systems to power something more dangerous."

The tall figure raised his hand toward the sky, his chanting intensifying. The other figures began to join in, their voices merging in a strange harmony that vibrated through the air, sending ripples through the forest.

"What do you think they're trying to do?" Kael whispered, his voice tight with frustration.

Ash's eyes were locked on the crystal. "I think they're trying to tap into the power of our bloodlines. They want to harness the power of the hybrids—us—and use it to unlock something far more dangerous." He could feel it in his bones—the power building in the air. They were playing with something ancient, something far beyond their understanding.

The ground beneath them trembled, a low hum filling the air as the crystal's light brightened. Ash's vampire side flared, his fangs elongating, thirst for blood rising as the pressure in the air increased. His phoenix side burned with fury, flames licking at the edges of his vision.

"We have to stop them," Ash muttered.

Kael's eyes gleamed with determination, his dragon blood rising to the surface. "No kidding. Let's teach these bastards a lesson."

But before they could make a move, one of the figures turned. His eyes glowed with a piercing violet hue, and he seemed to sense their presence. The rest of the group paused their chant, and the air went still.

"We have visitors," the figure spoke, his voice smooth, almost mocking. "I sensed you the moment you stepped onto this ground. How unfortunate for you that you arrived just in time to witness the awakening."

Ash's heart raced. He hadn't sensed him—hadn't even noticed him until it was too late.

"Who are you?" Ash demanded, stepping forward despite the tension in the air. He wasn't about to let them go unchallenged.

The figure smiled, revealing sharp, predatory teeth. "I am Dael, the Keeper of the Bloodline. And you... you are just the beginning of what's to come."

Ash's grip on his phoenix power tightened, his blood boiling with the urge to strike, but Kael grabbed his arm.

"Stay focused," Kael warned, his voice low. "We need to take them out, one at a time. If they're trying to use our blood, it's time to show them what happens when you mess with fire and claws."

Violet's wings fluttered, her form shimmering with light. "We're going to need to work together. Don't forget that we're in this as a team. Let's finish this."

Ash nodded. There was no turning back now. The ritual was already in motion, and if they didn't act quickly, they'd be the next sacrifice.

The night was far from over.
