"Brothers, silence, please!" Bowen Marsh shouted to the Night's Watch in the hall.

The chief steward's words had an effect, and the noise slowly died down. When the only sounds in the hall were breathing and the flapping of crows' wings on the roof, he announced, "Our beloved Lord Commander Mormont suffered a shameful betrayal north of the Wall and died. His bravery and fairness are worth remembering by every Night's Watchman until he enters the grave.

According to our laws, after the Lord Commander's death, we must elect a new one. To ensure a fair election, His Highness Cole Julius, Prince of Storm's End and Marquis of Midsummer Hall, Governor of the Stormlands, and Warden of the Stormlands, will witness this election.

Every brother of the Night's Watch can nominate someone for election, but each person has only one vote. Those nominated do not need to vote. Do you have any objections?"

"Very good." Seeing no objections, he continued, "So, let's begin the nominations now."

"Lord Janos Slynt was once the commander of the King's Landing City Watch. His courage and wisdom are clear, and he knows how to manage a castle or a wall much better than we do. Under his protection, King's Landing defeated Stannis, which shows he has great strategy and experience. So, I nominate him to be the commander of the Night's Watch." Alliser Thorne was the first to speak.

"I propose Eddie Tollett, who was the Old Bear's squire."

"I withdraw and ask to remove my name from the election. If you wanted to choose me, you had at least a dozen chances before, but it's clear you don't think I'm good enough. My friend told me earlier that I should support Janos."

Ser Thorne nodded, "Lord Janos is the best choice."

"Let me finish, Alliser," Yarwyck complained. "We all know that Lord Slynt once commanded the capital guard of King's Landing and was the lord of Harrenhal..."

"He has never even seen Harrenhal!" Cotter Pyke's shout interrupted him again.

Othell Yarwyck looked annoyed. "Yes, he has never seen it. Even so, he is a good choice, but I think Eddie is also good as the Old Bear's squire, isn't he?"

"So, who are you going to choose?" Janos Slynt's face darkened.

"Why not choose Cole?" The chief craftsman suddenly smiled. "He is Benjen Stark's nephew and the Old Bear's steward. We all know the Old Bear intended to train him as his successor."

"You're crazy! How can you choose that turncoat when he's charged with betraying the Night's Watch and murdering Qhorin Halfhand?" Slynt suddenly shouted. "In my opinion, he should be tried immediately. It just so happens that all the Night's Watch brothers are here."

"Shut up! Perhaps you can accuse a gold cloak of being a criminal, but remember that you are wearing black now," Cotter Pyke, the captain of the Eastwatch garrison, suddenly stood up.

"Brothers can nominate anyone as long as they have sworn to wear black," Ser Denys Mallister announced.

"Yes, I also nominate Cole. He is more suitable than me," Eddie Tollett said.

The hall suddenly grew noisy, as the Night's Watch brothers voiced their opinions.

"Quiet!" Bowen Marsh's voice rang out again. "Noise will only delay us here, and then those wildlings outside the Great Wall will take the opportunity to climb over the Wall and harm the place we are supposed to protect."

The voices in the hall quieted down again.

"Who else wishes to nominate?" asked the chief steward.

Except for Janos Slynt and Cole, no one else's name was put forward.

Cole looked at the other Cole, who was sitting in the main seat, and he said nothing from beginning to end.

"Then let's begin voting. Bring up the can." The stewards moved an iron can to the fireplace, opened its lid, and the brothers of the Night's Watch lined up to place wooden strips and stones into it. The wooden strips represented Janos Slynt, and the stones represented Cole.

A New Commander

When Cole began to count the votes, the can was full of stones, with only a small amount of wood. This meant that Cole would be the 998th Lord Commander.

Cole listened as the other Cole called out his name, already surrounded by brothers of the Night's Watch.

"Greatjon is older than me, and Mormont was stronger than me, but you are almost just a child, Cole. But I don't think you are worse than them. Your uncle Benjen is a man, your father is also, and I hope you are too. Don't let me down," Denys Mallister said to him.

"If you make a mess, I will dig out your liver and eat it raw with onions," Cotter Pyke grinned.

The crows cawed on the eaves. "Cole! Cole! Cole!" They imitated the words of the Night's Watch brothers. The big ravens have always been a part of the Night's Watch. Clearly, they also recognized the newly elected Night's Watchman, though no big raven flew directly to Cole's shoulder. The Night's Watch at Castle Black were familiar with it; it was the Old Bear's crow.

Cole looked at the crow with interest. When a warg inhabits an animal, if the warg's body is killed, part of their soul will remain in the animal's body. He wondered if the Old Bear's soul was in this crow.

The blood of the Northern ancestors seemed to carry the talent of skinchangers. Only one person in a thousand was born a skinchanger, and only one in a thousand skinchangers would be a greenseer. Bran seemed to be aenseer, while Robb and Cole were likely wolf spirits. Cole even guessed that every Stark child had this extraordinary talent. After all, mortals could not control the wildness of direwolves.

Cole touched his silver hair. A white direwolf... this was truly a coincidence. He wondered if he was a warg. After all, he could also entrust his soul to Caesar. How should he describe this? Dragon spirit?

This talent seemed to be possessed by more than just Cole himself. Many members of the Targaryen family had experienced "dragon dreams." They dreamed they turned into dragons. Cole remembered Caesar, who appeared in his dream.

He turned into him and broke out of the dragon egg. Maester Aemon's brother, Aerion Brightflame, dreamed he turned into a dragon and died by drinking wildfire. Of course, he was also a complete scumbag, and he died.

Perhaps if those Targaryens who had dragon dreams found the dragon egg that belonged to them, they would likely be able to wake the dragon from the egg. Of course, this was Cole's own guess.

The Targaryen family also seemed to have another talent, called "Dream Walker." The Dragon family escaped the Doom of Valyria with the help of the prophetic dream of Daenerys Targaryen, a "Dream Walker."

Unfortunately, there never seemed to be any prophecy in Cole's dreams.
