Cole tossed and turned in his bed in the King's Tower. Whenever he closed his eyes, the faces of his father and Ygritte flashed through his mind. When he opened them, the dark ceiling seemed to crawl with strange shapes, forcing him to think about what Cole had said.
He wanted nothing to do with the affairs of the South. Let the White Walkers take them all, he thought. But Cole was right. They had to plan for the worst. If even Mance Rayder couldn't stop them, then those dead things would be an even greater threat. The Wall was his now, and Cole had to be responsible for his brothers, which meant they needed more men.
If he told Robb, Robb would surely believe him. As the Lord of Winterfell, Robb had to consider the opinions of his own lords, but Cole believed he would be a good lord. The new recruits to the Night's Watch from the South spoke of Robb as the Young Wolf Lord, saying he and his wolf, Grey Wind, were unstoppable in battle. People often compared Cole and Robb, but Cole knew that in their past spars, Robb and Grey Wind had never beaten him.
Cole wasn't sure how it had happened, but he remembered introducing Cole to Winterfell. While his recommendation as a bastard might have seemed insignificant, Robb was the master of the castle then, and Cole believed Robb would pay attention to his letters. He thought to himself that when he went to Winterfell, he would have to ask Robb about it properly.
Though Cole longed to return to Winterfell, the thought of the castle made his heart sink, like a sword twisting within him. When he was young, he dreamed of grand deeds. He imagined saving his father's life and then declaring to everyone that he had proven himself a true Stark.
But when that chance truly came, it was his father who sacrificed himself to save Cole. He was no longer a Stark, and Eddard wasn't his birth father, but Cole had always loved him. Thinking of this filled him with guilt and hatred. It should have been him who died. Cole couldn't help but clench his fists.
Cole didn't know when he finally fell asleep. His mind was a mess. He didn't get up until he heard noise outside the tower. He pushed open the door, and the cold wind whistled in, making him shiver twice. The weather had grown even colder.
"Cole," Grenn called.
Cole heard Pyp say, "You should call him Lord Commander."
"You know who's back," Grenn's voice was filled with surprise.
"It's Sam the Slayer! It's Sam!" Pyp shouted from the side.
Hearing the name, Pyp circled around him. Cole was stunned for a moment, then asked, "Where is he?" This was one of the few pieces of good news he had heard recently.
When Cole saw Sam, he noticed two women with him: Gilly and Val. Gilly was Craster's daughter and wife. When they first met, she was pregnant with Craster's child. Craster was the master of Craster's Keep and had given the rangers a place to stay beyond the Wall.
"You're finally back," Cole said with a smile. "And you brought Gilly with you. Well done, Sam." He praised him.
Sam looked at the tired smile on Cole's face. When he had come in from the ice road, Pyp had told him that Cole was now the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He saw the camps set up around Castle Black, at the Wall's south gate.
Gilly had asked him about the flags. Sam recognized many sigils, but he couldn't quite place which families they belonged to until Pyp told him they were Cole's flags. Cole? The man who kept the library in order.
"I want to see Mance," Val asked Cole. "I heard you're going to judge him."
Mance, he silently shook his head. Though reason told him Mance wasn't truly his father's killer, Cole couldn't help but blame the King-Beyond-the-Wall. He believed he wasn't the only one who felt that way.
Cole's eyes were tired. "He is now the prince's captive."
"I want him to see his son. You should at least let him see him before you kill him." Val knew the crows would never let her brother-in-law go.
"I will ask for you. If the prince allows it, I think Mance should be able to hold him." Cole's face was slightly cold. "Sorry, Val, we still have duties to attend to, so I'll leave first." He turned and left.
Sam lingered for a moment, squeezed Gilly's hand, promised to return after dinner, then hurried to catch up with Cole. Cole noticed him. He knew Sam loved Gilly. She had innocent brown eyes, and Cole himself thought she was pretty, but compared to her, Val next to her was even more beautiful.
The first time he had seen Val was in Mance Rayder's tent. She was a beautiful blonde woman with long hair down to her chest, grey eyes, a slender but full figure, and elegant manners.
Cole talked to Sam about Gilly. Gilly would not be his wife, just as Ygritte would not be his.
"If Gilly says this child is mine, mine... then my mother will want him, and I know she will arrange a place for Gilly, a job that won't be harder than serving Craster." Sam blushed and told Cole he wanted to wait until the Night's Watch situation was settled before sending Gilly to Horn Hill.
"They say you're the Lord Commander now, Cole," Sam changed the subject.
Cole nodded slightly. "Just yesterday."
"Congratulations."
He just sighed. "So much has happened, Sam."
They walked to the King's Tower in silence.
"Do you know what silver hair means?" Cole asked.
"Silver hair and purple eyes, the traits of Valyrians," Sam answered quickly. Silver hair and purple eyes were once the most noble features in the Seven Kingdoms. He thought of what Pyp had told him about Cole's parentage.
"Silver hair and purple eyes... Targaryen," Cole muttered to himself.
"Cole, about your true parentage..."
He shook his head. "It's nothing, Sam. I am Cole, just Cole, and I will never change." After taking the oath, they only had one identity: the Night's Watch.
Cole asked him some questions about the White Walkers, but Sam himself was so scared that his mind went blank. When he came to, the monster had shattered into ice.
When Sam returned to Gilly, she was feeding Mance's son. "He sucks harder than my child," Gilly said, holding the baby to her breast and stroking his head. The two women had already drawn the attention of the Night's Watch brothers.
Every man who passed by couldn't help but stare. It wasn't until a silver-haired figure approached from a distance that their eyes shifted, including Sam's.
