Melody Zachary staggered back involuntarily, managing not to fall only because she was steadying herself against the corridor wall. She hadn't intended to eavesdrop; it was just that her room was inside the corridor.

A tear fell, and no wonder her son was angry and hardly spoke to her.

The corners of her mouth lifted in a self-deprecating smile. Recently, in an effort to win back her husband's heart, she had been like a chef, getting up early every day to prepare breakfast, going to the supermarket during the day, and then busying herself with making dinner...
