She had just landed on her bed when her phone screen lit up with Jack's message.
She reached for the phone and tapped on the message and read it aloud.
"Checked her out. Beatrice seems clean, nothing dirty or suspicious. I confirmed she's your cousin, though. Why the investigation?"
Her brow furrowed at the message. Clean? Of course, Jack wouldn't have found anything. And if he couldn't, then no one would. But something's off about her coming here now…
She didn't have the strength to type so she directly called Jack to explain.
"My mother just dropped by a few hours ago. She's trying to force Beatrice on me—says she needs a place to stay. Can you imagine that of all the people she could think of, it was me she chose?"
"You think there's more to it?"
"Of course," Shantel said immediately. "Beatrice is too perfect a pawn for her if my mother is at one of her games again. There's something my mother isn't telling me."
