My claws stretched again without me meaning to. "Then they can be the first to feel the new Alpha's justice."
Olivia didn't move. "Is it true what they're saying? That you helped frame Amara? That you betrayed Charles?"
I studied her face. Was she loyal to me, or just another spy? Was she sounding me out or genuinely looking out for me?
"What I did," I said slowly, "I did for the good of the pack. Charles was weak. He hid his daughter away for years because of some promise. He was afraid of her power." Better to play it safe, first.
"And you're not?" There was scepticism in her voice as she stared at me.
I laughed, though it sounded hollow even to my ears. "I welcome power, Olivia. I don't fear it."
That was a lie. I was afraid of Amara's power. Of what she could do when she returned. Of what the Mother would do if I failed her. I'm in the middle of two terrible beings or rather things, but I'm not going down like this.
