Chapter 1 - Oh, Elvira

The clock struck half past twelve, the sky was still dark as he wearily woke up. "Why must I wake up so late once again?" He thought.

"Avner!"

His mind said to him in his wife's voice. "Elvira…" he mourned and moped, lazily walking around the house, trying to work up the strength to even get a cup of coffee. He collapsed to the kitchen floor from exhaustion, he decided it's better off not doing anything anymore.

Time passes again and he wakes up from the floor not remembering a thing that happened. Except he does remember trying to make some coffee, which is now very unpleasant. Winds rushed inside so frigidly to the point your eyes could pop out with icicles, it was the time for happiness, but he didn't feel any amount of positivity, especially since Elvira, his wife sadly died in a car accident some days before now.

The day of her funeral would be held five days from the present. He wanted to go so terribly, so he could catch just a glimpse of her one last time. Shaken from the sudden knocks on his door he goes to check, only to find his daughter Esmerelda. "Hey dad, everything fine with you?" She was glad to see her father still looking alive.

"Ez, I'm so glad to see you. I'm holding up just fine. How about you? This is hard for everyone, you know."

Avner hugged his daughter tightly; feeling his daughter in his arms was the best feeling he felt in a long time. "I'm okay, I came to get some of my things Mom used." Esmerelda replied.

"Oh, well maybe you can stay for a while, these days I don't have much company." Avner had been feeling alone for a while. "Oh um, father I'm not really sure, I've been staying in this hotel recently." Esmerelda awkwardly looked at her father. "No worries, you're free to come if you like, I could give you a spare key?" Avner secretly really wanted to spend time with his daughter to make up for his past mistakes, but it probably doesn't matter just by the state of things. "That would be fine." Esmerelda smiled at him, she was glad that Avner tried to take care of her as much as he could "Well, I should get to work, gathering my things." Avner watched and helped Esmerelda; any time spent with his daughter is a good time for him.

After Esmerelda found every nick-knack and trinket, she came across something unusual. "Father? What's this?" She held a paper with her mother's name on it; it was a doctor's note. "Hmm? Well, it might just be any ordinary note I'm guessing." He seemed confused, it was only just a doctor's note. "Yeah, I know, but the date says October 16, 1985, doesn't that seem a bit odd to you? Mother died on the 11th, right?" "I remember it so vividly, but yes. Why?" Avner seemed confused as to where she was headed with this. "This is dated 5 days after her death, as if it already happened."

Hours pass and Esmerelda must go back to the hotel, "I'll be back tomorrow, okay? We should go someplace! It would be fun, for old times' sake!" Esmerelda was excited for tomorrow's father and daughter time, but Avner still looked uneasy from that voice. He was going insane but still he said, "I look forward to it." And forced a laugh.

As soon as Esmerelda closed the door to leave, Avner went right to his bed, "What's going on?" He said aloud, falling into his bed. He had no idea what to do, peculiar things were happening to him.

He figured when he fell asleep at least something would seem normal the next day.

Though he was going to have some nice father-daughter bonding time tomorrow which he really was excited about, he thought at least that would be normal. Memories of him and Elvira flooded back in his mind, the times they went on dates, when they kissed or simply hugged, when she said his name so love-filled, when they called each other weird names, the amount of love notes she made him. He really missed her so very much.

He falls into a hypnagogic sleep, He feels his soul reach out towards something, he doesn't know what, but it feels nearby. He can't breathe; he has no control over himself. By the time he almost passes out he gains his control, he feels weak, puny, putrid even. He still can barely move, even if free from his paralysis. But he glances at a bright emitting light from his closet, the shape of a woman walks towards him. "Avner Bakes…" a soft familiar voice is heard. "Elvira? Is that you?" Avner speaks hopefully, "Find me…Duskfall…Hill…" The spirit swiftly leaves out the door and disappears. "I need sleep."
