Chapter 19 - Chapter 18

The tower shook like it was experiencing a giant earthquake. The ice cracked above Jack's head, and green lightning flashed inside the frozen walls. Lena floated in the middle of the room, her body glowing like a neon billboard. The Revenant's voice boomed everywhere.

"SHE'S MINE NOW!"

"No way!" Jack yelled. He grabbed Lena's hand, but a shock of cold static threw him back again. His boots slid on an icy floor.

Vega's arm buzzed with blue energy. She punched a forged monster that lunged at her. The creature then exploded into a black goo. "Eli's a traitor! Stop him!"

Eli laughed, typing on a rusty computer. "Too late! The tower's gonna blow, and I'm outta here!"

Finch and Jax huddled around a control panel. The frost covered Finch's glasses. "The power's going crazy! We need to shut it down!"

"How?!" Jax shouted sheas and smashed her EMP gun against the ice.

"Lena's the key!" Finch said. "She's connected to the tower!"

Lena's Choice

Lena's mind was like a storm. The Revenant's voice hissed in her ear.

"Join me… together we'll rule…"

"No!" Lena gritted her teeth. "You killed my family! You're a liar!"

Suddenly, a soft voice cut through the chaos. A ghostly figure appeared: her grandfather, Subject Zero. His face was kind and not scary.

"Lena… you are stronger than this. Break the tower… free us…"

"How?!" Lena cried.

"Use your light… it's in your blood…"

Lena's hands glowed more brightly. She did not know how, but she had to try.

Vega's Sacrifice

Vega's arm was turning black. Blue veins crawled up the neck. "Jack! The tower's core—destroy it!"

Jack dodged a falling icicle. "How?!"

"With this!" Vega ripped open a panel, revealing a glowing red crystal. "Blow it up!"

Eli snarled and pulled out a knife. "Don't touch that!"

Vega tackled him. They crashed into walls. "Go, Jack! NOW!"

Jack grabbed the crystal. It burned his gloves. "Finch! What do I do?!"

"Throw it into the core!" Finch yelled. "But hurry—it's gonna explode!"

The Final Blast

Lena's glow was white-hot. The ghosts of New Haven's victims appear around her—frozen people, now smiling.

"We'll help you," they whispered.

The Revenant roared. "NO! THIS IS MY WORLD!"

Jack sprinted toward the core—a spinning ball of green fire. He hurled the crystal.

BOOM!

The explosion blew Jack off his feet. The tower groaned, and the ice shattered like glass.

Lena screamed, and light blasted from her eyes. The Revenant's voice shrieked and faded into static.

"YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS…"

The core collapsed. The tower began to crumble.

"Run!" Jax yanked Finch toward the door.

Jack grabbed Lena. "Come on!"

Vega struggled under Eli. "Leave me! Save yourselves!"

"No!" Jack reached for her.

Eli then stabbed Vega's leg. She screamed and kicked him into a pit of green fire. "GO!"

Jack, Lena, Finch, and Jax stumbled out. The tower collapsed behind them in waves of snow and smoke.

The Aftermath

The blizzard stopped. The Northern Lights faded to a normal state. Lena's glow disappears, and she passes out in the snow.

Finch checked the pulse. "She's alive!"

Jax hugged him. "We did it!"

Jack stared at the ruins. "Vega…"

A blue spark flickered through the snow. Vega's scarf fluttered in the wind.

"Maybe she's still out there," Finch said quietly.

Jack picked up the scarf. "We'll find her."

Suddenly, Lena's eyes snapped open, glowing green for a second.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

A radio in the snow crackled: "…see you soon…"
