Leana hesitates for a second. Her voice softens, like she's trying to reason with me, trying to get me to understand.
"To tell you the truth, Casey. I honestly thought it was sweet. I thought it was romantic.... You don't know this, but Sebastian has been kind of obsessed with you. Whenever I would meet him, he wouldn't stop asking about you, how you were in school, what your favorite things were, your favorite class, who you dated… he was just..."
She trails off, catching herself.
"I really thought he was into you, Casey, okay? I really still think he is. But at that time, when I invited you to his birthday, and when I knew what he was going to do, I didn't think it would turn into a whole scandal. I didn't think it would cause all of this..."
Her voice cracks.
"I'm sorry, Casey, okay? I am really sorry. I know I haven't been a good friend ..."
I stop her, lifting my hand mid-air. I want to tell her it's fine, I really do, but there's still that phone call.
