Chapter 18 - First blood

Although the system's information was interesting, this wasn't the place nor the time, my mind coming back to the problem at hand. I would need to stay hidden. I would love to fight them all at once, but I think that one goblin with the spear might have had a better point than me, I thought sarcastically.

Better make use of my ring, I think, as I slip it back on my finger. Now, let's scout the place out. I look around for some high ground to better get a look at the area. I spotted a big pile of boxes near the wall that looked stable enough, but the goblin leaning on a box near it would make it a little more challenging.

I looked around, and it seemed that this goblin was alone. Guess he'll be my first kill. I would need to get behind him or lure him here—but with what? What would I use as bait?

So I began to search my pockets. I didn't have much on me, other than my wallet, ring, and the goblin bone knife. I guess I could use a coin, though I was unsure if it would work. But what did I have to lose? So I tossed the coin from behind cover and waited for the goblin to respond.

I watched the goblin's eyes widen in surprise, and then shift into greed, and so I readied myself for the bloodshed to come. I listened to the footsteps, and when the goblin bent over to pick up the silver coin, I snuck up behind him. My knife made its way under his helmet and against his neck, and in one clean move, I opened his throat. As I pulled back, I could hear the gargle as the thing tried to speak—or scream—I did not know, and I didn't care.

I laid the body down gently so as not to make any noise. But before I could react, a blue light shined from the corpse before it disappeared, and a blue screen appeared in the corner of my vision:

"One spear goblin body collected."

I briefly read the message before I picked up the coin and continued my way to the pile of boxes.

But as I moved, a small spark of curiosity had sprung up, and so I asked the system, Hey system, you got any info about these spear goblins for me?

"Yes, host. The all-knowing system will depart some knowledge upon you. The spear goblin is a small and weak monster. It isn't uncommon for them to attack in large numbers to make up for this, but that is not the only way. It is common for higher-level goblins to use weapons like the spear and bow to even the odds a bit, with them often specializing in that one weapon."

Well, that's interesting and good to know, I thought as I climbed the pile of boxes.

As I reached the top, I made myself comfortable. If I knew I would be doing so much running and sneaking around, I would have done more exercise, I thought as I huffed and puffed, trying to catch my breath.

And just so you assholes in the audience who are watching me know—yeah, I have a super fit body thanks to the system—but I'd like to remind you I'm still suffering from head trauma and running for my life from my sister.

And no, I will not be talking directly to you—it breaks immersion in the story or something like that. So hold all questions until the end of the story.

And with all I needed to say said, I turned back to counting the number of goblins.
