His words sank in as she looked up at him. He didn't look like a man curious for her secrets — he looked at her like someone dissecting a puzzle piece by piece.

This isn't about her, Damian reminded himself.

It was about the mission to break them apart. First, he needed confirmation of her feelings for his Devil, Logan. Then he would twist that closeness, turn it into doubt. Still, the faint quickening in her pulse beneath his thumb sent a strange satisfaction curling through him. Proof that she wasn't as untouchable as she pretended.

Harper's chest tightened, her breath uneven. It wasn't only fear that burned through her — and that scared her more than his closeness. She hated how his words sank under her skin, how the air between them thickened until it felt like there was nowhere left to run.
