In one second, she was in her own apartment, scrolling through her phone like any youngster of this age, trying to decide which show to watch to drown out the pain racking her heart… and in the next heartbeat, she found herself amidst the clouds.
For a fleeting moment — one where her mind swirled with confusion — Emmie almost believed her heart had finally given up, that the misery had become too much, and she was now swimming in a sea of blue, with clouds as her only companions.
Which was strange, really, because she had always believed she would end up in hell for all she had done.
But the thought lasted only an instant. Because the very moment she felt her legs dangling, searching desperately for solid ground that wasn't there, when her heart began to thunder in her chest as if adrenaline had replaced her blood, her eyes widened, her vision clearing enough for her to see not only the endless clouds but the world far beneath her.
Her heart stopped.
