Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Gun Store

Almost at the exact same time many growls from behind and a nearby alley to our right side could be heard.

I looked at Mandy and shouted "Quickly! Let's go!"

Mandy nodded and replied "Yeah!"

We took off running, setting our sights straight to the gun store, about a hundred metres ahead of us.

I glanced over my shoulder and saw a group of zombies emerging from the alleyway on the right of the one Mandy and I just came from.

I noticed Mandy was gradually beginning to slow down, I wasn't sure if it was because of her hurting leg or due to the gun in her arms... or maybe a combination of both.

"I'll open the door, you immediately run inside!" I told Mandy, picking up my pace.

Mandy nodded her head in agreement, turning her head to look how far the zombies behind her were.

A few moments later I finally arrived at the door. I grabbed the cold and large handle and pulled; it was heavier than I expected. The door was made of mostly glass, though from the side I could tell it was very thick.

I pulled with a lot of strength, and it finally opened, after that, it was much easier to open the rest.

I opened the door most of the way, allowing Mandy to run inside with no problem, "Get inside!" I shouted at the Mandy who was a few seconds from the door.

I noticed the zombies running towards Mandy were much closer to her than I expected they would, I went inside, standing in the entrance, holding the door from the inside.

I watched tentatively and hopefully, each second feeling like a minute, I felt sweat forming on my forehead, "Am I going to watch someone die before my eyes again?" dark thoughts began surfacing in my mind as I kept watching with hope.

Finally, to my relief, Mandy made it inside before the zombies could grab her. The second she ran inside, I slammed the heavy door shut, a zombie's hand was trapped between the door, it's blood splashed on my face as the zombie let out what resembled a pained shriek, it almost caught me off-guard.

I quickly whipped my face of the blood and heard continuous thuds and scratches of the zombies running into the door.

"Move out of the way, Adam." Mandy ushered me, pointing her gun towards the door, holding it against her shoulder, leaning and covering herself against a smooth, round pillar, which had been positioned to the right of the door, which I was in front of.

I quickly moved out of the way and noticed the locked staff and storage room, or at least that's what I assumed it to be. I looked around and the interior of the store seemed a lot smaller than how it looked from the outside.

Mandy kept aiming toward to entrance door, waiting for something to happen. I decided that while the zombies were struggling with the door, I would look around for a key to get into the back room, as I figured there had to be one.

As I looked around the store, I saw the almost crazy amount of guns and ammunition that was just on display... though that was to be expected because this was a gun store.

A loud banging sound caught me off guard, I looked toward the door and saw a huge crack, they couldn't get in yet, but any moment now, if I couldn't find the key to the storage room, Mandy and I would be in the same, small room as a group of ten zombies, if not more.

I began to desperately look for the key, almost ignoring the guns entirely, opening cabinets behind the display tables, only to find dust and a lot of ammunition for the guns above the drawers.

Another loud banging and cracking could be heard, this time, the glass on the door looked like it was about to break.

I ran over to the checkout desk, which was facing the door and just in front of the storage room and flipped it over, having the top of the table facing the door.

I shouted at Mandy, who had flinched from the sound of the desk falling over "Get over here quickly! You'll have a better shot here!"

Mandy looked over and quickly ran behind the flipped over table and aimed her gun, holding it against the top of the table.

For a moment, I continued looking for a key before hearing a very delicate crackle sound, with fear in my movement, I slowly looked at the door and saw a hand through the front glass of the door.

A shiver went down my spine as I slowly stood up and I walked over to an automatic assault rifle that had been hanging on the wall and mounted the strap over my shoulder.

The hand in the window began to move and more and louder cracking sounds emanated from it.

Before I could get next to Mandy behind the flipped over table, the glass finally broke and a dozen zombies immediately fell through on the ground.

I quickly went behind the very same pillar, where Mandy had stood just moments ago.

The first few of the dozen zombies began to stand up and I raised my gun, aiming down sights through the scope mounted on the assault rifle.

The first three of the zombies that stood up seemed to be in a triangle with one of them standing in front of the other two. Mandy was the first shoot, hitting the one that had been standing in front and a few of the pellets grazing the one that had been standing to its left.

The only unaffected zombie quickly noticed me and began approaching me, to the left of the pillar.

I took a nervous, shallow breath and aimed at its head, pulling the trigger.

Click

A sense of despair washed over me, as there had been a magazine installed into the gun, but there weren't any bullets. I pulled the trigger, I pulled it again and again, every time the same clicking sound could be heard.

I gritted my teeth and a sudden feeling of anger, which completely overwhelmed the feeling of despair came over me. Blinded by rage, I took off the strap of the gun and held the barrel of the gun and used blunt force against the zombie, swinging the entire gun against the its head. It didn't fall down immediately and began approaching me again. Before it could take even one step towards me, without hesitation, I kept bashing in the head of the zombie, it's blood splashed onto my face and body more with each hit.

***

Almost disturbed by the sight of what Adam was doing to the zombie in front of Mandy, she looked away for a moment, even the zombies seemed to hesitate for a moment.

As Mandy's head was turned to the side, something glimmered from the corner of her eyes.

Mandy took a moment to look where she had seen it, after a second or two, she finally spotted it, it was a key. Understanding the door behind her needed a key to be unlocked, she knew she had to at least try.

She glanced over at the zombies at the entrance, seeing a lot more of them had gotten inside and had stood up - they were headed to them both. She quickly picked up her shotgun and shot all the remaining bullets in her magazine at the zombies, nearly all of them had fallen to the ground or struggled to move for a second, those that didn't get hit were too far to catch her for a few moments.

Knowing this, she didn't hesitate and took up the key and inserted it into the lock on the door and turned it - the door was unlocked.

"Adam! Quickly!" Mandy shouted at Adam, who had stopped bashing the zombie.

Adam turned and with a surprised expression began running, "Nice one!"
