Chapter 39 - Dominoes Falling

‎The apartment was quiet except for the soft tapping of rain against the windows. Liam sat on the couch with his stuffed bear, legs crossed like a miniature adult, eyes wide as he watched Ava and Ethan huddle over the laptop.

‎"Mommy… Daddy…" he began, tilting his head. "Why are you looking so… serious? Did someone do something bad?"

‎Ava froze, her fingers hovering over the mouse. Ethan glanced at her, a silent question in his eyes. She knelt to Liam's level.

‎"It's complicated, baby," she said carefully. "Sometimes, people do things that aren't fair, and we have to make it right."

‎Liam frowned, squinting. "Like the mean lady? The one who said you two were half-siblings?"

‎Ethan's jaw tightened, but he forced a small smile. "Exactly like that, buddy. She tried to trick us with a lie."

‎Liam's small brow furrowed. "But… you're not related, right?"

‎"No," Ava said firmly, brushing a curl from his forehead. "Not at all. And that's why we're safe."

‎"But… if she's lying… can she lie again?" Liam's voice was small, but the question carried weight.

‎Ethan crouched beside him. "She might try. That's why we have to be smart. And strong. And watch out for each other."

‎Liam nodded slowly, as if taking in the responsibility. "Okay… I'll help too."

‎Ava blinked. "Help… how?"

‎Liam shrugged, stuffing his bear under one arm. "I ask questions. Sometimes people tell the truth if they have to answer kids."

‎Ethan laughed quietly. "I think that's exactly right, Liam. You're… smarter than most adults."

‎The Strike

‎Ava and Ethan returned to the laptop, fingers flying. Evidence compiled, emails drafted, every secret Claudia had buried for decades now exposed in one digital avalanche.

‎"Ready?" Ava asked, voice steady but trembling with anticipation.

‎"Ready," Ethan said. Liam bounced slightly on the couch behind them, curious eyes fixed on the screen.

‎They hit send.

‎Across the city, Claudia's empire trembled. Every secret, every manipulation, every illicit transaction suddenly had witnesses, proof, and consequences.

‎Liam watched the screen blink, unaware of the magnitude of his tiny involvement. "Did we… win?" he asked.

‎Ava pulled him onto her lap. "We did, baby. We did. But we have to stay smart."

‎"Can I help next time too?" Liam asked, eyes shining.

‎"You always help, Liam," Ethan said, smiling. "Even if it's just asking the right questions."

‎Cole Estate – Claudia's Reaction

‎Claudia's phone buzzed. She answered immediately, but her face drained of color as she scrolled through the emails. Each click, each opened attachment, was another fracture in her carefully controlled world.

‎Victoria hovered nearby, unsure whether to gloat or panic.

‎"They sent it," Claudia said, voice tight. "Everything… it's all out."

‎Victoria's eyes widened. "They actually did it?"

‎Claudia's smile was cold, but brittle. "Yes… and Liam is part of it," she whispered, almost bitterly. "The child… he might have been small, but he's… perceptive. That boy is more dangerous than they realize."

‎Ava's Apartment – Aftermath

‎The rain had stopped. Liam perched on the arm of the couch, still holding his bear, eyes bright. "Mom… can we tell Daddy's mom now?"

‎Ava laughed, a sound of relief. "Not yet, baby. We do it carefully. But soon."

‎Ethan wrapped his arms around both of them, the weight of the past months lifting, replaced with quiet triumph and the small, intimate warmth of family.

‎Liam yawned, curling into Ava's lap. "I like this… being part of your team," he murmured.

‎"You always are, baby," Ethan said, pressing a kiss to his son's forehead. "Always part of the team."

‎And in that moment, for the first time in months, Ava, Ethan, and Liam felt untouchable a family forged in fire, ready for whatever came next.
