Rengoku explained to Murada Shinichi that a demon's strength primarily comes from its powerful regenerative abilities. If that ability were removed, they would be far less dangerous.
This meant that if a demon were injured, even if not killed, it could be easily decapitated with a Nichirin Blade.
At worst, a mutually destructive outcome could be achieved.
However, injuring a demon was currently impossible; only a one-hit kill would work.
Murada Shinichi then looked at Ryuji and cautiously asked, "Senior Ryuji, was the demon you fought an Upper Rank?"
Seeing Shinichi's curiosity, Ryuji nodded. "The third-ranked Upper Rank. He's a master of hand-to-hand combat, extremely skilled."
As Ryuji described and praised Akaza, Shinichi hesitated, seemingly debating whether to ask directly, when Ryuji added, "I didn't kill him."
Shinichi didn't get the answer he'd hoped for. Ryuji's status, in his eyes, surpassed even the Hashira, so he'd hoped for news of Akaza's death.
Kyōjurō wasn't surprised by Ryuji's answer. Ryuji's ability to escape unharmed was already impressive. Kyōjurō concluded that Akaza hadn't gained any advantage.
"Senior Ryuji, Rengoku-sama! Why didn't those two Upper Ranks continue to pursue you?" Murada Shinji, taking over for his brother, asked, voicing his own confusion.
Logically, with no clear victor, even if Ryuji and Rengoku chose to retreat, the Upper Ranks' lack of pursuit was unusual.
"Maybe they were afraid of Senior Ryuji and Rengoku-sama!" Murada Shinichi flatteringly suggested.
"Whether they were afraid or not, they certainly didn't dare to continue the fight," Ryuji replied.
"That's right! That's right!" Murada Shinichi immediately agreed.
Kyōjurō looked at the gradually brightening sky and interjected, "It's the time! Dawn is approaching! That's why they didn't pursue. Once the sun rises, they'll have no chance to retreat!"
"Exactly! The sun is their greatest enemy!" Rengoku added.
Murada Shinji finally realized this; the intense battle had made him lose track of time.
He now understood how long the fight had lasted.
Ryuji and his group returned to the train derailment site. The sky was growing brighter, and with injured members and the unknown location of Tanjiro and Zenitsu with the train passengers, Ryuji decided to have Rengoku and Inosuke remain while he searched for Tanjiro and Zenitsu alone.
However, Rengoku took over this task, leaving Ryuji with Inosuke and the others.
As time passed, the sky fully brightened, and the morning sun peeked over the distant ridge.
The morning sun wasn't harsh but warm.
Ryuji finally breathed a sigh of relief. If Kokushibo and Akaza had pursued, he wouldn't have had the energy to maintain his Oni form much longer.
