~Bella's POV
For a moment, Alex and I just stood there in silence. We watched as she drifted off to sleep. The soft beep of the monitor, the faint rustling of sheets, and Mia's even breathing were the only sounds in the room.
"I should let her rest," I said eventually, brushing my hand over hers once more.
Alex walked to the side, letting me pass. As I stepped out into the hallway with him, I felt his hand brush lightly against mine, just for a second. I didn't pull away.
"She's lucky to have you," he murmured.
I looked up at him, meeting his eyes. "I think I'm the lucky one."
Alex placed his hand gently at the small of my back as we stepped out of Mia's room. I gave my sister one last glance, peaceful, resting, and then closed the door quietly behind us. The hallway was calm, almost too quiet, and for a moment I just stood there, letting the weight of the entire day settle over my shoulders.
"You okay?" he asked softly, his voice low and steady beside me.
