In the conference room of Fleet Admiral Sengoku, many of the Marine's top officers had gathered.
It had been a long time since their last major failure, broadcast live to the entire world.
Sengoku, in particular, still blamed himself deeply for the previous disaster—the incident where Kronos exploited the chaos and humiliated Marine Headquarters. He had even submitted his resignation as Fleet Admiral three times.
However, the Five Elders had rejected his resignation every time, insisting that Sengoku remain in his post.
Now, after receiving news of the impending battle between Whitebeard and Kronos, Sengoku's fighting spirit reignited.
Having suffered defeat at the hands of two pirate crews during the Summit War, this new conflict presented Marine Headquarters with the best chance to recover its lost honor.
During the Summit War, Whitebeard and Kronos had indirectly worked together to tear Marine Headquarters apart. Although there had been some exchanges of fire, no full-scale battle had broken out between them.
But now, the situation was different.
The two pirate crews had openly declared war on each other, and a direct confrontation was inevitable.

Akainu spoke up after seeing everyone seated.
When Sengoku had submitted his resignation, Akainu had hoped to become his successor and take over as Fleet Admiral himself.

Akainu had always adhered to his own strict version of "absolute justice." If he were to become Fleet Admiral, Marine Headquarters would undoubtedly undergo a radical transformation under his command.
Unfortunately, that opportunity hadn't come yet.
For now, Akainu could only suppress his ambitions and focus on his current role.
"Alright. Since everyone's here, you should already know the latest intelligence."
"I didn't expect Whitebeard to challenge Kronos so aggressively. I thought after the battle at Marineford, Whitebeard would lay low for a while."
"But since they've made this choice, they've handed us an opportunity."

Sengoku slammed his hand on the table, his frustration clear for all to see.
The external criticism Marine Headquarters had suffered after the Summit War weighed heavily on all of them, but none more than Sengoku.
He had bottled up his anger and guilt, stubbornly holding onto his position.
If not for this emerging opportunity, Sengoku might have submitted his resignation for a fourth time.
According to intelligence from the Five Elders, the war between Kronos and Whitebeard was certain to result in heavy losses on both sides.
The rise of Kronos represented a serious challenge to Marine Headquarters' control over the seas. To Sengoku, finding a way to eliminate Kronos was of utmost importance.
Now, at last, the opportunity had arrived.

"And when is the best time to act? Should we wait until they've worn each other down?"
Aokiji raised his questions calmly—issues that everyone knew were critical to the plan.
