"No matter how much we read, it doesn't feel like I know any more about the mark of beloved souls than I did to start with," Lenore says. She holds one of the books that they've finished on the topic like it'll give more answers if she stares at it long enough.

Alaric, by her side as they spend another evening together in what's become a routine that feels like it's always been a part of their lives, seems to share her sentiment as he sighs and leans back in his chair. "That might be why I didn't remember much information about the details of the mark even though I'm certain I've read these books before. There's simply not enough information in them that's worth remembering."
