Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: All the Men Are Dead

The three of them walked out of the hospital. Seeing Ji Rui's expression, Manager Cao naturally didn't dare to provoke him, sensibly sitting in the front passenger seat. Ji Rui waited with a stern face for Le Tong to get into the car before he got in, and once he sat down, the car was instantly filled with a cold and sinister atmosphere.

Ji Rui sat straight-faced, lips pursed, Le Tong, because of her back injury, also could only sit upright, the two of them like two statues, motionless in the back seat.

While in the hospital, Le Tong felt a burning, stabbing pain in her back, but now facing Ji Rui, the scorching sensation seemed to spread to her face, an embarrassing mix of anger and several unknown emotions filling her heart, even making her forget the burning pain in her back.

Le Tong's mind was in chaos, thinking about a lot of messy things, it was only after the car had driven a distance that she gradually calmed down.

Throughout the entire incident, she was a complete victim. But after going through Ji Rui's strange mind, she probably became the little secretary using a hardship tactic to seduce the CEO.

Le Tong didn't understand why Ji Rui's mind was so dark, but she felt she needed to clarify things, if there was a misunderstanding, she at least had to clear it up.

"CEO..."

Le Tong slightly turned her body towards Ji Rui, inadvertently pulling at her wound, and couldn't help but let out a low "hiss" of muffled groans in pain.

Ji Rui turned his head to look at her, his cold, sinister eyes, under the faint night light, reflecting a wolf-like chilling gleam.

Enduring the discomfort in her back, Le Tong explained, "CEO, I don't understand what you meant by your words just now!"

Although she could roughly guess his dark thoughts, she believed her innocence was clear and felt no need to rush to clarify.

Ji Rui gazed at her with unfathomable icy eyes for quite a while before slightly curling his lips into a shallow smile.

That smile, like him, was extremely cold, definitely not friendly, but full of mocking laughter.

"Le Tong, stop pretending!"

Le Tong was momentarily stunned, though she was mentally prepared to hear some unpleasant words and knew that this man's coldness and harshness were notorious, she had always thought his personality was limited to work, unexpectedly, in private, he was no different.

No matter to whom, he always acted aloof, and also had paranoia, thinking all the women in the world were after him!

Perhaps she was really right, such a man, having only a good-looking appearance, but inside, was heartless.

"CEO, my IQ is not on the same level as yours, could you trouble yourself to speak clearly, don't make me guess the riddles, okay?"

Fine, since you tell me not to pretend, I'll insist on pretending!

Serve you right for getting angry!

Le Tong endured the pain, imagining Ji Rui being angered, felt a slight pleasure.

Ji Rui probably didn't expect Le Tong would actually dare to keep pretending, his face slightly stiffened, his gaze at her grew sharper.

"Stick to being your secretary, don't dream unrealistic dreams!"

Upon hearing this, Le Tong laughed.

"CEO, dare I ask, in the past six months, when have I not stuck to my duties? What unrealistic dreams have I had?"

Le Tong laughed so amusingly, inadvertently pulling at her back, the pain causing tears to spill from the corners of her eyes.

Le Tong wiped her eyes, firmly meeting Ji Rui's scrutinizing gaze.

"CEO, rest assured, even if all the men in the world die, I will never have any improper thoughts about you!"

After speaking, Le Tong couldn't be bothered to look at Ji Rui's colorful expression, turned her face to look out the window.

Previously, Le Tong would be drawn to Ji Rui's outrageously handsome face – after all, he's a handsome guy, who wouldn't want to take a few more glances?

But now, Ji Rui's mocking face made her feel nauseous.

The hospital was not far from the hotel, the car soon drove back to the hotel.

Manager Cao escorted the two back to their rooms, said a lot of nice things, and then left in fear.

Once Manager Cao left, Le Tong grabbed the medicine prescribed by the doctor and walked to her room, pushed open the door, and was about to enter when she heard Ji Rui behind her saying.

"You're leaving tomorrow!"

Le Tong paused, but didn't turn to look at him, after a moment of silence, she replied "okay", then slipped into the room and closed the door.

That night, Le Tong slept very restlessly, for one, because her back hurt terribly all night, and second, because Ji Rui's increasingly sharp attitude towards her caused her uneasiness.

Throughout the night, Le Tong had already prepared for the possibility of being fired.

The next morning, Le Tong woke up early, freshened up, took a larger dose of pain medication, grabbed her luggage, and left the hotel by herself.

Returning to her small apartment, the first thing she did was call Luo Yuanyuan over to help her apply the ointment.

Luo Yuanyuan, while applying the ointment, muttered.

"Tongtong, how did you get yourself into such a mess? This is a work injury, you could give Ji Rui hell!"

Le Tong lay groggy on the bed, "Yuan'er, stop nagging, let me sleep for a bit!"

This matter had nothing to do with Ji Rui, coupled with Ji Rui's current attitude, Le Tong didn't want too many entanglements with him.

Luo Yuanyuan saw she was indeed so tired that her eyelids were drooping, so showed mercy by not making a sound.

Once Le Tong woke up, the apartment was all dark.

She braced herself to get out of bed, "Oh yeah!" cried out, falling back onto the bed.

She had slept so deeply that she forgot about the burn injury.

It seems Luo Yuanyuan had already left. Le Tong carefully sat up, turned on the light, sure enough, there was a note pressed on the bedside table.

"Tongtong, I've left. There's porridge in the fridge, heat it up and eat it, I asked the doctor, your injury isn't serious but you still need to avoid certain foods, try to eat light things for the next couple of days, and tomorrow remember to go for a check-up at the hospital, I noticed a few blisters on your back…"

Luo Yuanyuan's usual nagging, even leaving a note, she filled up a whole page with dense writing.

This lengthy and rambling message, however, made Le Tong smile lightly, in this world, only Yuan'er was genuinely caring and loving her.

The next day, Le Tong got up early and went to the hospital, the doctor checked her and said her recovery was good, those blisters were from the places that were burned more severely, just apply ointment for a couple more days and take some anti-inflammatory medication, she'll be fine soon.

Le Tong asked the doctor for several days' worth of medication, "Doctor, my tolerance for pain is low, could you prescribe me more painkillers?"

The doctor didn't ask much, prescribed her five days of painkillers according to her request.

Le Tong went out to buy a bun and ate it in the taxi, then took twice the prescribed dose of pain medication as instructed.

"Tongtong, why did you come back? Weren't you accompanying the CEO to L City?"

Seeing Le Tong return, people at the company kept questioning her.

"The CEO said I couldn't be of much help there, I still have some tasks to handle here, so he sent me back."

Le Tong was uncertain whether Ji Rui would dismiss her, but she didn't want to give him a reason to do so.

After all, finding a job with such high pay is really hard.

Others, when unemployed, can rely on family and friends, but for her, the only person she can depend on is herself.
