Chapter 37 - Underhanded Scheme

Annan furrowed her brow.

These two siblings were truly persistent…

Wei Wenbin stood there, his thin, bony frame almost like a skeleton, with hollow cheeks that made him resemble a ghost.

Qian Ying'er was slightly more filled out, but still gaunt, her short hair plastered to her scalp, her body shriveled, almost resembling a man at first glance.

She did seem somewhat like her past life, though.

But, it had been less than a month since she last drove them away. What gave them the courage to come back here?

This time, Annan had no intention of going easy. She immediately opened the shooting hole and raised the nail gun, preparing to fire.

The two outside, seeing the sudden appearance of the shooting hole on the door, recalled the previous scene when arrows had struck them on the rooftop, causing them to scramble for cover behind the door's corners to avoid the shots.

What was going on? Annan's door had a mechanism too?

Wei Wenbin furrowed his brow in realization.

He knew that Annan had no knowledge of such things, so it must have been Zhao Ping'an who helped her set this up.

But why would Zhao Ping'an help her?

Suddenly, Wei Wenbin's eyes widened. Could it be that Annan was now with Zhao Ping'an?

He thought back, recalling seeing that boy from the top floor before the disaster. He was fair-skinned and relatively handsome.

But how could he compare to himself? When it came to education, looks, and physique, he was undoubtedly superior!

It must be because of economic status...

A sour feeling began to rise in Wei Wenbin's chest.

This Annan was truly a gold digger! Her family was so wealthy, yet she still looked down on people!

She had been cold and dismissive towards him, but the moment she encountered someone with money, she got together with him so quickly!

Annan, unaware of his dirty thoughts, only felt that the trap Zhao Ping'an had designed had some flaws.

—The blind spots were too large. The two of them had hidden behind the door, and there was no way to hit them.

It seemed she should learn from him and set up a trap that sprayed strong sulfuric acid next time.

She closed the shooting hole, pulled out a triangular bayonet, and decided to go outside to deal with them directly.

At that moment, Qian Ying'er, hiding outside, shouted, "Annan, don't misunderstand! We're not here to ask for food, but we have something very important to tell you."

Wei Wenbin quickly added, "That's right, Nan Nan, open the door! We've seen your father."

Father?

Annan's mind immediately conjured the image of her father, An Xingye, with his grim, somber face.

He was no longer her father.

She thought of his betrayal of her mother, causing her grandmother's death, stealing the family business, and driving her out of the house. He had watched her suffer and die, doing nothing to help.

A wave of anger surged within Annan.

In her past life, she had died a brutal, agonizing death. Any gratitude for giving her life had long been erased.

This time, Annan would never treat him as her father again.

But how had these siblings seen An Xingye? Wasn't he holed up in his villa, drunk and living in decadence? How could he have come to the city?

These two were probably lying, trying to lure her out with news of family.

Annan's vigilance rose, her grip tightening on the bayonet.

She quietly unlocked the door, then suddenly threw it open, aiming the bayonet directly at Wei Wenbin and thrusting it with all her strength.

"Watch out!"

Qian Ying'er, on the other side, shouted, holding a canister of unknown spray. She rushed to spray it towards Annan.

Annan felt the bayonet pierce Wei Wenbin's flesh, but in the next instant, a cloud of spray hit her face, blinding her.

Instinctively, she squeezed her eyes shut. Unable to see, she subconsciously loosened her grip slightly.

Seizing the opportunity, Wei Wenbin quickly retreated, and Annan's bayonet was pulled out of his body.

At that moment, Annan didn't have time to worry about him, as the spray carried a strong chemical odor.

She had accidentally inhaled some, and immediately felt dizzy.

Her heart raced with alarm.

Was this… a sleeping drug?

Qian Ying'er continued spraying the canister, edging closer to Annan.

Annoyed, Annan held her breath, swung her bayonet, and tried to strike down the irritating woman. But her strength felt sapped.

She realized with horror that if she were knocked out, who knew what might happen.

Annan held her breath, quickly retreated, and stumbled back inside the door. She then swiftly shut the stainless steel door to the stairwell.

She looked at her surroundings, but everything seemed to sway.

That outer door wasn't secure and could easily be pried open. Summoning all her willpower, Annan struggled to control her hands and closed the armored door as well.

Collapsing to the floor, her consciousness began to fade. She used the last of her strength to activate the electric mechanism and turn it to the maximum before succumbing to darkness.

Before she lost consciousness, her only thought was that Zhao Ping'an had been right. He truly was useful.

...

Outside, Qian Ying'er tossed the empty spray bottle to the ground and walked over to support Wei Wenbin.

"Wenbin, are you alright?"

Wei Wenbin pressed a hand to his bleeding shoulder, his heart pounding.

Thankfully, his cousin had sprayed the drug just in time, or else Annan's bayonet would have pierced his heart, or another strike would have ended his life right then and there.

He shook his head, feeling dizzy.

This drug was indeed potent. Despite having taken an antidote in advance and holding his breath, he still felt faint.

He ripped off a strip of cloth from his shirt and tightly bound his wound to stop the bleeding before replying:

"I'm fine. Annan should be unconscious by now, right?"

Qian Ying'er pressed down on his wound with a grim expression. "She's definitely out, but it's a pity she managed to escape back inside."

She glared at the closed steel door. "With such strong effects, she definitely didn't make it back home! She's probably hiding right behind that door. Let's get her while she's still unconscious."

Wei Wenbin nodded. "Right, Brother Wang is still waiting. We need to move fast. The sleeping drug is all gone, and if she wakes up, we'll be in trouble."

Originally, he hadn't wanted to provoke Annan any further. He had seen her mercilessly kill so many times.

He didn't think he had the strength to defeat her.

And he didn't believe she would show any mercy to him and his sister.

Since he had moved here and Annan had blocked him on WeChat, she had become a completely different person—cold and unapproachable.

Her attitude had changed drastically not just toward them, but also in her complete disregard for life, taking others' without hesitation.

She cut people down as if slicing vegetables, without an ounce of emotion.

After the last time, when she had wielded a chainsaw to drive an entire unit away, he had made up his mind to never cross her again.

For survival, he and Qian Ying'er had gone to see Brother Wang at Building 12. There, they had managed to secure some food.

But in less than a month, Brother Wang had grown tired of them, saying Qian Ying'er was as dry as a skeleton and refusing to let her return.

Without Brother Wang's food, they had no chance of surviving.

So they had started gathering beautiful women to exchange for food with the men in Building 12.

Wei Wenbin, once a promising PhD student, had become a pimp to survive.

But Brother Wang was very picky, not liking women who were too thin. He demanded they bring in more attractive, healthy women.

The disaster had lasted for two months—where could they find women with decent appearances now?

In their frustration, they suddenly thought of Annan.

Fortune favored the bold!

If they could capture Annan, not only could they get food from Brother Wang, but they could also seize the supplies from her house…
