Umbravale high could be a very interesting place to be in but there were times you'd rather be dropped into a boiling pot of witches brew than to come to school. The first annoying thing about Umbravale high was a group of girls called SPAR girls, the school's most popular girls.
Ezzy and Ria were walking down the hallway when someone stuck out a foot making Ria trip but Ezzy caught her just before she fell.
" Be careful, Ria" Ezzy said.
" You know you should really take off those weird crown glasses" Selene, the leader of the group said. " You look ridiculous and you can't even see well"
" It's a new school year Selene, when are you gonna stop being so damn petty?" Ezzy asked.
" Why should we?" Penelope the second in command said.
" Cause I don't wanna have to kill you. It will be too much stress finding a place to hide your body"
Ashi scoffed. " As if you have the guts"
" Try me then you'll find out" Ezzy said giving her a crazy grin.
" I didn't come for you, Esme" Racquel the last of the girls said. She turned to Ria and said. " Stay away from Andre. He's mine"
" He's not you're property" Ria said. " You can't own something that isn't yours."
" I will make your life a living nightmare" Racquel said.
" Your silly and empty threats mean nothing to me" Ria said.
" Okay then. Don't say we didn't warn you" Selene said. " Come on girls. I need to check on Drayce."
They formed a straight line in the order of their hierarchy and walked away in their tight miniskirts and heels.
" How are they even comfortable in those?" Ezzy asked pointing at the miniskirts and heels.
" That's their problem but I'm not giving Andre up without a fight" Ria said
" That's my girl. If you want something you have to fight for it"
" Yeah. You know what? Maybe I should even tall him about my feelings."
" Well that's a great idea because here comes Andre"
Stunned, Ria swung around and her eyes met Andre's.
" Hi Ria" Andre said. " Hi Ezzy"
Ezzy nodded her reply.
" Hey Andre what's up?"
" Nothing. I just wanted to tell you something".
" Really?" Ria asked.
" Well I guess I'm gonna run along now" Ezzy said. She winked at Ria before walking away.
" So what do you wanna say?" Ria asked smiling.
" I just wanted to say..." Andre began.
" Yes I'm listening" Ria said eagerly, her heart thumping with joy.
" I just wanted to say that Principal Lillian wants you to clean the auditorium" He said stretching the key towards her .
Ria's smile faded as she collected the key.
" Ouch" Ezzy whispered from her eavesdropping spot.
Andre started walking away, he stopped and came back to where she stood.
"One more thing" He said.
" Yes" Ria said, her face lighting back up.
" Principal Lillian said to return the key when you're done"
" Oh"
" Do a great job" He said before walking away.
" Let me guess. That wasn't what you were expecting" Ezzy said coming out of her eavesdropping spot.
" Nope" Ria said looking downcast.
" Love!" Ezzy said shaking her head " Such a dumb thing"
" You know Ezzy, people who don't like love actually end up falling the hardest" Ria said.
" Not me though" Ezzy replied confidently
" I will remind you of this day"
" Hmmmnnnn." Ezzy said not sounding convinced. " You know Ria, I think you're forgetting something" Ezzy added with a look of concern on her face
" What's that?"
" Andre's from a wolf clan. He is also an Alpha meaning he's bound to have a mate . He also turned eighteen last year. So what if the reason he hasn't been showing interest in you is because he has a mate."
" That is so true" Ria said. " How could I forget? But I haven't seen him with anyone. And the news would have gone round the school that Andre Bloodfang the newest Alpha of the Sapphire moon crest clan has a mate".
" There's only one way to find out" Ezzy whispered.
" What?" Ria asked in a whisper.
" You need to find a way to touch him"
" Touch?"
" I read a book that says werewolves find their mates through smell or touch. If you touch him and you feel a spark, boom! you're his mate."
" Oh Ezzy! " Ria squealed. " You're the bestest friend in the whole wide world"
" I know. But promise me you won't be heartbroken if you're not his mate"
" I will try not to"
" Good"
Operation finding out if Andre's my mate is in motion, Ria said to herself. She had been spying on Andre for almost an hour. He was finally alone and was sitting under the giant oak tree in the school garden. The plan was to act like she needed help with something then find a way to touch him.
With a satisfied look on her face she walked towards him.
" Hey Andre" she said as soon as she got to his side.
Andre raised his head. He was surprised to see Ria.
" Oh, hi Ria, what's up?" Andre said.
" Nothing really" Ria said sitting next to him. " I just have a problem with this math equation and I heard you're good at math so I decided to ask you about it"
" Okay show me"
Ria brought out the book and handed it over to him. Andre carefully explained the math equation to her, making sure she understood meanwhile Ria wasn't even paying attention. She was busy staring at him.
Wow I never noticed this before, she thought to herself, his eyes aren't even brown they're somehow yellow, golden yellow.
"Do you understand?" Andre asked after he was done explaining.
" Um... Yes I do" Ria said. " Thanks"
Here it goes.
Making an attempt to collect the book, Ria placed her hand on Andre's. A sharp electric jolt ran through her whole arm making her pull it away.
" Ouch that was painful" she said rubbing the arm.
" What?" Andre asked.
" didn't you feel that?" Ria asked unable to hide her surprise.
" Nope" Andre said getting up. " Anyway I gotta run. I have basketball practice"
He walked away leaving a stunned Ria behind.
Did he really not feel it or was he lying.
Heartbroken she lay under the oak tree with her eyes closed.
Running to the basketball court, Andre held his hand.
Mate spark. The words ran through his head. Since last year when he had turned eighteen there were no signs of him having mate. His wolf also hadn't woken up in him. He finally knew why. He had the Mate's curse.
He can't tell Ria she's his mate. She's destined to die if he accepts the bond. He will have to reject her when the opportunity comes. Alphas with the Mate's curse are destined to die without a mate. He could feel the mocking eyes of the moon goddess.
He chuckled bitterly, " You win this round, Selene"
" Dude where were you?" Kairos asked Andre as he got to the basketball court.
" You're late buddy" Estevan said.
" Again" Kairos added.
" Come on, let's play" Drayce said.
All the girls in Umbravale just lived sitting around watching the boys play. The ones whose boyfriends were on the team would come to cheer for them.
Oleta, Mona and Ria managed to drag Ezzy to watch the match. She reluctantly sat down. Apple also came to join them. The girls at the back were talking about how Drayce was so handsome with a perfectly sculpted body.
" Ugh... I don't even know what girls see I. That Drayce guy" Ezzy muttered.
" Do you need my glasses?" Apple asked taking them off.
" No I don't need your glasses" Ezzy said.
" Okay, but I really think you need glasses" Apple said, putting hers back in place.
The last bell was rung which meant it was time to go home. The students stood up with their bags and went towards the school exit.
The principal asked Esme to close the doors and windows. She had told her friends to go without her. She did a little reading before leaving. It was night when she finally decided to leave. She saw Drayce in one if the classroom.
" What are you still doing here?" Esme asked.
" Everyone is entitled to a little peace and quiet sometimes" was the reply.
She found themselves walking to the parking lot together. Ezzy entered her car. She tried to start it but it wouldn't budge.
" What the hell!" She yelled. " You were fine this morning."
" Get in my car" Drayce said.
" Nevermind." Ezzy said. " I can try if my wings will be strong enough to get me home"
" Shut up and get in" Drayce said. He hated saying things twice.
Esme hesitated for a while before entering the car. She sat there feeling a little uncomfortable. Drayce leaned towards her suddenly. Ezzy's eyes widened and her heart started pounding wildly. His face was merely inches from hers. His reddish lips looked so soft and biteable. She thought he was gonna kiss her but he reached fur her seatbelt instead and buckled it.
" Your seatbelt" Drayce said.
" Oh" Ezzy said feeling like a total fool. She could swear she saw his lips curve into a small grin but before she could have a closer look it was gone so quickly that she guessed she must have imagined it. Drayce dropped her right in front of her house.
" Thanks for the ride" Ezzy said.
Drayce didn't reply. He just drove off.
" Rude" she snorted.
She entered into her house. Her mom had already gone to bed. She climbed up the stairs to her room and immediately slumped on the bed. Without taking a shower, she slept off still wearing her clothes.
