Bruce raised his hand and pointed at Zhang Yang, shouting,
"Hey! Have you spotted Kaitō Kid?"
His tone made it obvious—Bruce was already boiling with rage.
After all this time, they still hadn't seen a trace of Kaitō Kid. On top of that, he looked like a total mess. Anyone would be on edge.
Zhang Yang shook his head.
"Not yet."
Bruce cursed under his breath and brushed past Zhang Yang.
"Shit! That bitch Kaitō Kid—once I catch him, I'll make him pay!"
"Reinforcements are on the way. I'd like to see where the hell he thinks he can run!"
Zhang Yang pulled out his phone and quietly took a picture of Bruce and Harrison's miserable backs.
Then he turned and headed toward the stairwell, making his way straight to the rooftop.
Bruce had called in backup a while ago. If Zhang Yang didn't leave now, things really would get tricky.
Not long after crossing paths with Zhang Yang, Harrison suddenly reached out and stopped Bruce.
"Wait a second. That agent we just saw—he was alone!"
From the very start of the operation, Bruce and Harrison had made a countermeasure specifically for Kaitō Kid's disguise technique:
Every agent was to move in pairs. No exceptions. No solo actions allowed.
But the one they'd just run into was completely alone.
Both of them had been too irritable and exhausted to notice.
"Shit!"
"That must've been Kaitō Kid!"
"Bastard! That damn bastard!"
Bruce roared in anger, yanked out his radio, and alerted the rest of the agents.
"Kaitō Kid was just spotted in the third-floor hallway. Everyone stay alert—he's in this building!"
Bruce and Harrison turned back at once and headed toward the stairs. Even though they hadn't caught him yet, they had at least confirmed that Kaitō Kid was still inside.
By the time the two of them rushed into the stairwell, Zhang Yang was already nearly at the rooftop.
At the same time, a few media outlets had arrived outside. Their cameras were now aimed at the iron fence surrounding the asylum.
"Dear viewers, we have breaking news! It looks like Director Bruce and his team have surrounded an abandoned psychiatric hospital nearby. Apparently, Kaitō Kid is trapped inside!"
"As you can see, law enforcement is all over the perimeter. The lights inside the hospital are flickering, and we can even spot shadows moving past the windows!"
Bruce hadn't expected the media to show up so fast. He had planned to wait until after capturing Kaitō Kid to hold a press conference and bask in the spotlight.
But now, the broadcast cameras were already locked on the asylum.
[Oh shit! There's actually a psych ward here? Why would Kaitō Kid run in there?]
[Oh my god! Kaitō Kid's in trouble now. Bruce's team has him cornered!]
[I've been to that place—it used to be an abandoned asylum, then they turned it into a haunted house. Why the hell did they go in there?]
[Damn, Bruce and Harrison are slick—waiting to clean up after the chaos!]
[Probably cut him off during his escape. He must've had no choice but to run in there!]
The livestream chat exploded with chatter. In all the operations they'd followed, this kind of sudden twist was rare.
Enforcement agents quickly reported the media presence at the perimeter to Bruce, but he didn't seem worried at all. His confidence was sky-high.
"As long as we don't let the press inside, it's fine."
He was already certain Kaitō Kid was inside this building. For Bruce, there was no doubt—tonight, Kaitō Kid had nowhere to run.
He picked up his radio and urged the other agents to speed up the search.
"Stay alert. Do not, under any circumstances, let Kaitō Kid get out of this building!"
They were just one step away from catching him. There was no way Bruce was going to let such a perfect opportunity slip by.
At this moment, Zhang Yang had already reached the rooftop. After confirming no one was chasing after him, he couldn't help feeling a little disappointed.
If Bruce and the others didn't come up, they could easily drive around and catch up to him.
"Guess I'll give them a little hint."
Zhang Yang lit up some fireworks on the rooftop to lure Bruce, Harrison, and the others up there.
At the same time, he twisted a steel rod through the rooftop door to make sure they wouldn't be able to burst in.
The moment the fireworks lit up the night sky, chaos erupted in the livestream chat.
[WTF? At a time like this, Kaitō Kid is still lighting fireworks?]
[Heh, looks like he's cornered, but the truth is—he has wings!]
[Oh my god! Bruce is still falling behind. There's no way they're catching Kaitō Kid!]
[They had such a good setup, and still blew it. Bruce and Harrison are total idiots!]
[Remember what Davis said about the two of them during the challenge?]
Bruce and Harrison instinctively looked up the moment they heard the fireworks.
Immediately, every agent in the building rushed out of their rooms, their first instinct to charge for the rooftop.
"Shit! Kaitō Kid's about to fly!"
Bruce cursed through gritted teeth and led the charge upstairs.
But when they arrived at the final iron door to the rooftop, they found it wouldn't budge.
He kicked it several times, tried everything, and finally peeked through the gap—only to discover the door had been jammed shut with a steel rod as thick as a thumb.
"WTF? Kaitō Kid actually bent a steel rod that thick?"
Bruce was completely dumbfounded.
Zhang Yang's build was pretty average—not particularly muscular or bulky. He didn't look like someone who could bend a steel rod with his bare hands, especially one that thick.
Even Bruce himself couldn't manage that.
"Hurry up and get this damn door open!"
Bruce grabbed a few nearby agents and had them take turns forcing it.
The door was quickly dented out of shape. Zhang Yang could tell enough people had arrived. He spread open his Silver-Winged Cape and leapt into the air.
A white streak cut through the night sky as Zhang Yang glided gracefully away, disappearing from the livestream cameras.
[Hahaha, the moment I saw fireworks on the rooftop, I knew Kaitō Kid was going to glide away!]
[As a loyal fan, I totally guessed how he'd escape!]
[The fireworks are done. So where are Bruce and Harrison?]
[Tsk tsk, those two are always a step too late—it's pathetic!]
[Wait a sec, is that Harrison running out of the building?]
While Bruce and the others were still fumbling with the door, Harrison had already figured it out.
The fireworks were just a distraction.
So he was the first to dash out, hop into Bruce's black SUV, and speed off in the direction Zhang Yang had gone.
The media crews quickly jumped into their vans and followed to keep the livestream going.
Bruce and the agents finally managed to kick open the rooftop door after exhausting themselves.
But on the other side, the door had simply been dislodged from the wall. The steel rod Zhang Yang had twisted around the latch? Still perfectly intact.
Bruce ran to the edge and looked down, stomping his feet in frustration.
"Shit! He got away again!"
