Zoe's POV
The sound of the front door creaking open was small, almost innocent. But it ripped through my ears like thunder.
My fingers slipped from the handle as if I had touched fire. A sharp jolt ran through my bones. The kind that makes you wonder if doors aren't just pieces of wood but actual vessels for demons to crawl through.
I pushed the door only wide enough for my body to slip out. My head hung low, my shoulders shaking. My palms pressed hard against my ears, as though I could shut the world out if I just squeezed them tight enough.
But the world doesn't leave so easily.
My eyes darted open and closed. Blinking. Failing. My vision stretched and shrunk until it left nothing but fragments. A figure stood inches away from me.
I tried to focus. But it was all wrong. Blurry and out of place.
