Chapter 20 - Collision Course

The walls felt like they were closing in, but Rhea had never been clearer. The storm raging outside was nothing compared to the one inside her heart.

Rhea's hand trembled as she stared at the message on her phone screen:

"The system is waiting, Rhea. Your time is running out. Choose wisely."

She tossed the phone onto the table, her chest tightening. Every breath felt like a war, every thought, a battle she couldn't win. She wasn't sure anymore who she was fighting for: herself, Lucien, or the twisted system that wanted to control everything.

Lucien's voice broke through her thoughts.

"You don't have to face this alone, Rhea," he said softly, his hand brushing her shoulder. "I'm here. We can find a way out of this."

His words hit her like a lifeline, but the pressure in her chest only grew heavier. "You don't understand, Lucien. Kairo's grip on me—it's too strong. He knows my every weakness. He created me to be a weapon... and I don't even know if I can stop myself from becoming one."

Lucien stepped closer, placing a hand on her waist. His touch was steady, unwavering, and it gave her a moment's peace. "Then let me help you. I'm not leaving you, no matter what."

Rhea met his gaze, her heart aching with the weight of the decision she had to make. Love. Revenge. The system. All of it twisted inside her, threatening to tear her apart. But Lucien was right. She didn't have to choose alone.

"We'll face this together," Lucien whispered, his lips almost brushing hers.

But Rhea knew the moment of truth was approaching.

The Underground Lab

The elevator doors slid open with a sharp hiss. Rhea and Lucien stepped into the cold, sterile lab. The flickering fluorescent lights above them cast harsh shadows, but there was no turning back now.

"I've been waiting for you, Rhea," Kairo's voice echoed from the center of the room. He was standing, waiting with a cold smirk on his face, like he had already won.

Rhea clenched her fists, every inch of her fighting the urge to charge at him. She couldn't let him get to her. Not now. Not after everything she'd been through.

"You've been waiting for my failure, Kairo," she spat, her voice steady despite the storm inside. "You never thought I'd make it this far, did you?"

He chuckled, the sound like nails on a chalkboard. "You were always just a tool to me, Rhea. You were never meant to survive."

Rhea's heart clenched.

She had trusted Kairo, relied on him. But now, it was clear. His betrayal was worse than any of the system's lies.

"You helped me," she whispered. "You helped us escape. And this is how you repay me?"

Kairo's smirk didn't falter. "I never helped you, Rhea. I used you. Just like I used everyone else."

Lucien's anger flared beside her, but he held back, his hand brushing against hers for a brief moment. "You're nothing but a coward, Kairo. Hiding behind your lies."

Rhea's eyes burned with fury. "You think you can control me? You think you can control us?" she said, her voice trembling but strong. "I'm done being your pawn."

Kairo's gaze hardened. "You don't get to decide, Rhea. The system already has its plan in motion."

The Final Choice

Rhea's breath caught in her throat. The lab around her felt colder now, the walls closing in as Kairo moved to activate the override.

"No," she said, her voice steady. "I don't care what the system wants. I won't be anyone's weapon. Not anymore."

Lucien stepped closer to her, his hand firmly gripping hers. "We can do this, Rhea. Together."

But before she could act, the entire room seemed to freeze. Kairo's voice was calm, mocking. "You really think you can stop me? You really think you're free?"

"I'm not free," Rhea said quietly. "But I'm choosing this moment. Choosing to fight back."

With a swift motion, she ripped the control panel from the wall, the flashing red alerts blinding her.

"Kairo," she said through gritted teeth. "This ends now."

She hit the button.

The Confrontation

Kairo's eyes widened as the room shook. "You think you can rewrite everything? You're wrong. This isn't over."

But before he could say another word, the screens around them lit up with flashing red warnings.

"System Override Initiated."

Rhea didn't wait for Kairo's reaction. She turned to Lucien, her hand grabbing his. "We don't have much time. We need to leave now."

Lucien squeezed her hand tightly, his eyes filled with concern. "Rhea, are you sure you want to do this? We're about to—"

"I don't care," she interrupted, her voice fierce. "This ends here. I'm taking control of my life back."

With one last glance at Kairo, Rhea and Lucien ran toward the exit. But just as they were about to reach the door, the lab's main control center went into lockdown.

Kairo's voice echoed in the chamber. "You think this is over, Rhea? You've only just begun."

The system was fighting back.
