Butler Jude halted, surprise flickering in his eyes as he turned to squint at her. "How do you know about that?"
Selina glanced nervously into the dim corners around them. "He told me. We may not be close now, but... that's why I asked."
His frown deepened. "Sounds like you're asking to have your room moved outside the estate. Far from here."
"No," she said quickly, almost pleading. "I just care about him. I want to know how to get along—"
"Don't ask about the past," he cut in sharply. "That's forbidden in this estate. You'll only end up provoking someone you shouldn't. Break that rule, and you could be thrown out... or worse."
"I won't break the rules," she said firmly, determined to survive no matter what.
"Good for you," Jude said, his voice flat. "And one more thing. Let go of the idea that you'll ever get close to Mr. Zane. That young man is more cruel and dangerous than you realise. Don't provoke him—because if you do, no one here will protect you from him."
