Aidan stared at Anna, waiting for the faintest sign that she was joking, that this was just another one of her sharp remarks meant to sting him.
Instead, her teary expression said it all. She was damn serious and there was only one way to confirm that.
The silence between them stretched for a brief moment before he let out a low chuckle.
Without another word, Aidan turned on his heel and stormed out.
Anna watched him leave. He slammed the door shut behind him and she listened to the car outside roar to life, and only then did her composure shatter.
Tears welled in her eyes before spilling over, and she sank onto the nearest chair, covering her face with both hands.
And she burst into tears.
Behind the wheels, Aidan's hands locked around the steering, his jaws clenched with anger and frustration. The engine roared beneath him as he pressed harder on the gas.
