Anna woke with a groan, her skull pounding as if someone had struck her with a hammer. A dull ache hit her from the back of her head.
When she tried to sit upright, her body failed her as she slouched to the floor again.
At first, she thought she had simply rolled out of bed too quickly after a restless night, but then the details pressed in on her; she was supposed to be at Aidan's penthouse.
But the sharp sting in her wrist, and the darkness around her made confusion cloud her mind. It made reality snap her out.
She wasn't in any safe place she recognized. She could feel every bump and jolt, and the air smelled of gasoline and rubber.
Then it confirmed her suspicions that she was in a moving car. And the darkness around her meant she had been blindfolded and her hands and legs were tied.
Her breath caught.
Panic surged into her lungs like a flood breaking through a dam.
"No… no, no, no." Her voice quivered.
