Ever since the great war between the two clans a thousand years ago, the Soul Clan had vanished completely from the Dou Qi Continent. Although a few of their strong members occasionally appeared throughout the centuries—and some remnants were hunted down by the Xiao Clan's powerhouses—those were nothing more than small fry.
The Soul Hall, however, was a different story.
Originally, the Soul Hall had been something like the Soul Clan's "subsidiary organization." Although two of its Saints had participated in that ancient war, many powerful members hadn't joined the battle.
These people weren't just strong—they were smart.
When news came that the Soul Clan had been annihilated, they didn't rush out for revenge like hot-blooded fools. Instead, they immediately went into hiding—and even split up to conceal themselves separately. This made it extremely difficult for the Xiao Clan to root them out completely.
Moreover, the half-war before Xiao Xuan's ascension to Emperor had already cost the Xiao Clan many experts, so they eventually decided to let the remnants be, choosing to recover first.
Now, a thousand years later, the Xiao Clan was so powerful that even without Xiao Xuan, they could crush the former Soul Clan with ease. Yet, the clan's upper ranks had no particular interest in hunting down Soul Hall remnants across the continent.
They only sent out younger members from time to time to search for traces—as a form of training.
Still, catching one of those fugitives was considered a major accomplishment.
With Xiao Yan's current speed, it took him less than an hour to travel effortlessly from Yan City back to Wu Tan City.
The city was as peaceful as ever. Within the Zhang family compound, disciples went about their usual routines—some cultivating, some sparring—completely unaware that a lone figure was hovering silently above them.
Xiao Yan looked down at the people below, his expression icy cold, a cruel glint flashing in his eyes.
To eliminate all potential threats, he had no intention of sparing anyone—not even a dog.
In his previous life, his personality had always been extreme: if he decided to act, he would do it thoroughly. Mercy? That was a luxury he had never valued.
Since he'd chosen to kill, he would make sure not a single root remained.
Just as he was about to strike, a strange fluctuation suddenly rippled out from beneath the Zhang family estate.
Xiao Yan's brows lifted slightly.
A mysterious figure in black robes slowly emerged from underground—surrounded by swirling black mist. Judging by the aura, this person was a Dou Zong-level expert. Without a doubt, he was a Protector of the Soul Hall.
"Well, what a surprise," Xiao Yan chuckled softly. "A Soul Hall Protector actually walks right into my hands."
He didn't bother to hide his presence. A wave of his immense soul power swept through the area, directly alerting the newcomer.
The black-robed Dou Zong froze for a second before instantly flashing forward, appearing before Xiao Yan.
"May I ask who you are, sir? It's rare for someone of your caliber to appear in such a small city."
His tone was polite but wary. That spiritual pressure just now had far surpassed his own. As for cultivation, though they hadn't yet exchanged blows, he could feel that this young man was extremely dangerous.
"Who am I?" Xiao Yan smiled faintly, still holding Qing Lin in his arms.
"I was once helped by a junior of the Zhang family. I came here to repay that debt. But you, my friend—your appearance is rather… unique. May I ask your name?"
"Oh, so you're here to repay a favor," the black-robed man said, visibly relaxing. "You can just call me Protector Wu."
The moment those words left his mouth, he noticed Xiao Yan giving him a strange look—an almost pitying grin. A bad premonition immediately surged in his chest.
This Protector Wu… a destiny NPC that never fails to show up no matter how history changes, huh? Even the destruction of the Soul Clan didn't erase him.
Xiao Yan spoke each word slowly, his voice laced with malice. "So, you're from the Soul Hall, then?"
Protector Wu's face changed drastically."How do you know that?"
"Jie jie jie…" Xiao Yan's eerie laughter echoed through the air, the sound sending chills down Qing Lin's spine.
"Damn it! Even that laugh—he's using my signature laugh!" Protector Wu's heart sank. Before he could act, the young man's next words made his blood run cold.
"My name is Xiao Yan—of the Xiao Clan."
"Xiao Clan!?"
Protector Wu froze, then felt a deep chill spread from his heart outward.
The Xiao Clan?!
From the first day he'd joined the Soul Hall, his seniors had warned him over and over: the Xiao Clan was the Soul Hall's greatest enemy. If he ever encountered one, he should kill them immediately if possible.
If not—then never provoke them. Alerting a member of the Xiao Clan could mean the annihilation of an entire Soul Hall branch.
"So… you're from the Xiao Clan!" Protector Wu shouted, but his body suddenly turned translucent.
A second later, his real form appeared a thousand meters away. Out of sheer instinct, he activated a forbidden technique, burning his blood essence and fleeing for his life.
But he had barely escaped the outskirts of Wu Tan City when a figure appeared silently behind him.
"You—!" Protector Wu gasped in horror, only to see a fist the size of a boulder hurtling toward his chest.
"Go down already!" Xiao Yan snarled.
Boom!
His punch landed squarely, backed by the combined force of his physical strength and Dou Qi. Even a five-star Dou Zong would've suffered grievous injuries from that blow—Protector Wu, a mere three-star, stood no chance.
Blood sprayed from his mouth as despair filled his eyes.
It was over.He couldn't fight.He couldn't run.
Desperate, he clenched his teeth and ignited his blood essence again, rushing straight back toward the Zhang family compound.
Within moments, he reappeared inside the Zhang family's courtyard.
"Lord said—if anything goes wrong, destroy the Zhang family and the spatial passage!"
Protector Wu's eyes were filled with madness and despair.
"If I fall into that kid's hands, I'll suffer unspeakable torment! Better to die—and take a few more with me!"
With that thought, a wave of violent soul energy exploded from his body, sweeping through the Zhang estate.
In an instant, every Zhang clansman went blank-eyed, blood streaming from their seven orifices before collapsing dead to the ground.
Protector Wu had unleashed a forbidden soul technique—wiping out the entire clan.
"You think you can take me alive? Impossible!"
He laughed maniacally, his Dou Qi rapidly swelling within him, distorting the air around.
He was about to self-destruct.
But suddenly, the unstable space around him froze—stabilized by some invisible force. The Dou Qi inside him stopped expanding… then began to shrink.
"Jie jie, little fellow," an aged voice chuckled. "Trying to blow yourself up in front of me? You're still too green."
An old man stepped out of the void, smiling faintly as he patted Protector Wu's shoulder.
That single tap was enough to make Protector Wu go rigid. His entire Dou Qi circulation was sealed in an instant.
"I didn't even have to act," Xiao Yan said cheerfully as he appeared, walking out from the spatial fold. "You've already cleaned up everyone for me. You must be such a kind soul—couldn't bear to let me dirty my hands, huh?"
Laughing, he grabbed Protector Wu's limp body, gesturing for Wen Sheng and Wu Sheng to follow him into the Zhang family's hidden underground chamber.
There, a massive circular portal shimmered before them—about ten feet wide.
"This spatial tunnel…" Xiao Yan murmured, eyes narrowing. "On the other side should be a Soul Hall branch, right? Wen Lao, Wu Lao—it's time for you two to earn some merit."
A wicked smile spread across his face.
"Jie jie jie!" Wu Sheng cackled, eyes burning with excitement.
Even the usually calm Wen Sheng grinned this time.
"Jie jie!"
