Between the Black-Corner Region and the Magical Beast Mountain Range lay a vast stretch of jagged peaks — and nestled among them stood the grand Beasts Taming Sect, perched upon the tallest mountain of them all.
This sect had nearly a thousand years of history within its empire. Rumor had it that the sect's disciples possessed extraordinary spiritual strength, making them especially suited to cultivate the unique beast-taming techniques that the sect was famed for.
Every generation's sect master was said to have reached the Dou Zong realm, and each commanded a seventh-rank magical beast as their sect's guardian. That kind of strength already far surpassed the royal family's might.
Yet strangely, this sect had always remained indifferent to worldly power. All of its elders were mysterious figures who came and went like ghosts, rarely seen within the sect itself.
Even so, countless cultivators tried desperately each year to join the Beasts Taming Sect — though the sect only recruited true geniuses. And to become a core disciple? One had to pass a mysterious "heart refinement" trial.
But all of that was merely surface-level appearance. The true, earth-shattering secret lay hidden deep beneath the sect's mountain.
If anyone were to dig through the thick mountain walls beneath the Beasts Taming Sect, they would uncover an enormous cavern — and within it, a vast, gloomy temple complex.
The complex stretched for dozens of li, towering nearly a hundred zhang high, hollowing out nearly half the mountain itself. This was no ordinary temple — this was the location of a Soul Hall branch hall.
At the topmost seat of the grand hall, an old man dressed in black robes sat silently. His very presence radiated a stern, commanding pressure — the kind that required no words to inspire fear.
"Elder Niu, the Beasts Taming Sect recently recruited a very promising disciple. If properly nurtured, he could become another Protector for our Soul Hall,"reported the sect master respectfully before him.
Some men wore the mask of a righteous sect master in public… yet in secret, served as loyal Protectors of the Soul Hall.
"Is that so? Then give him the Heart-Refinement Trial,"Elder Niu replied indifferently, raising an eyebrow.
A mere Dou Zong-level talent — useful, perhaps, but ultimately insignificant. Even if they gained another Dou Zun someday, they still couldn't move openly.
As long as the Xiao Clan still existed, the Soul Hall would never dare reveal itself under the sun.
If this dragged on much longer, the Xiao Clan might not even need to destroy them — the Soul Clan would fade into history all on its own.
"Yes, Elder!"
The sect master's face lit up with barely hidden delight — if the Elder didn't take interest, that meant the new genius might remain under his control.
The Soul Hall was an underground organization. Anyone wishing to truly join had to first pass mental examinations — to ensure they weren't a Xiao Clan spy — and then undergo brainwashing until they achieved absolute loyalty.
Only then would the organization nurture them in earnest.
And admittedly, Soul Hall's covert operations were meticulous — frighteningly so.
Once the sect master left, Elder Niu sighed heavily.
For a thousand years, he had taught the same things to new recruits — that Soul Hall would one day rise again, that their clan would reclaim the continent.
But deep down, he and every other old relic knew the truth. They were ghosts hiding in the dark. If they ever stepped into the light, they'd instantly be branded as Soul Clan remnants — hunted and executed.
"At the last meeting, the Vice Hall Master swore our clan had birthed a prodigy — one destined to lead us to glory. Said the child had the potential of a Dou Di. Hah! If I hadn't followed that old fool for centuries, I might've believed it."
He snorted bitterly.
"What's the point of painting dreams every day? I'm old… All I wish now is to die peacefully of old age."
He sighed again. A millennium of decline had left him numb.
Once, the Soul Hall had twenty-four branch halls — each guarded by several Dou Zun experts. Now, only twelve remained. Some branches were reduced to a single Elder… like this one.
Thinking that, his brow furrowed.
"Why hasn't Protector Wu returned yet? I only sent him to confirm the new branch clan head's situation. What's taking so long?"
"Protector Jie," he ordered after a pause, "go check the spatial passage. See what that fool Wu is doing."
Even though he had long since "given up," a thousand years of habit kept him dutiful — when subordinates failed to report, he still followed up like a responsible old bureaucrat.
"Yes, Elder."
The black-robed Protector bowed slightly and flew toward the spatial passage.
The Zhang Clan held a special position in the Soul Clan's grand design — useless perhaps in strength, but crucial to the continuation of their bloodline. Moreover, each successive clan head carried a precious artifact.
Individually, the items weren't powerful — but their collective importance was undeniable.
As Protector Jie approached the spatial rift, he thought with a sneer:
Old Wu, if you botched this task, the Elder's going to chew you out again.
Just as that thought crossed his mind, the spatial passage ahead began to ripple faintly.
Protector Jie's ugly face brightened under the hood — finally, his partner was back. Maybe no scolding this time.
But at that exact moment — far away in the hall — Elder Niu's face drastically changed color.
"Everyone—RUN! Run as far as you can!"
The sudden bark of panic stunned the dozen Protectors present. They had followed this Elder for centuries and had never seen him this alarmed.
In an instant, Elder Niu raised both hands — tearing open half a spatial tunnel with brute force.
"Hehehe… Finally found you. This'll earn me a huge merit!"
A sinister voice echoed from the rift. The next moment, the entire hall froze.
The very space solidified — locking everything in place.
Despair flashed across Elder Niu's eyes.
Protector Jie's head buzzed, and when he realized what was happening, it was already too late — the surrounding space had turned as hard as steel.
From the collapsing rift, three figures slowly stepped out.
A young man and two old masters — all smiling faintly as they surveyed the trapped Soul Hall members.
"One Dou Zun, over a dozen Dou Zong… Heh, what a fine catch!"
Xiao Wu's face gleamed with excitement. Capturing Soul Clan remnants was no small feat.
When Elder Niu saw them, despair finally settled in.He could feel it — the two old men behind the youth were at least Half-Saints.
Against such opponents, there was no escape.
And so, his weary heart finally quieted.
"A thousand years… I've had enough. Let someone else deal with this mess."
"Hiding like rats every day… I'm done."
"Born human… I am sorry."
He closed his eyes — and silently triggered a secret technique.
Crack!
A faint sound echoed from within his soul — the sound of it shattering.
Elder Niu, one of the last of the ancient Soul Hall Elders…took his own life.
