Chapter 50 - Work for Me

Huron led Alvaro to the meeting room and ordered all the guards to leave.

Alvaro watched them go. His sharp eyes scanned the room, looking for any movement. It was possible Huron had called him here to execute him.

But the general stood in front of him, watching him calmly. Their eyes met.

Huron looked at Alvaro's clothes—simple clothes like a commoner's, bare feet. No sword, no uniform, nothing.

"You're the crown prince's guard. How could you be so careless?" Huron said, ignoring Alvaro's hateful glare.

He continued, "How many mistakes have you made? You put the prince's life in danger. Do you understand that?"

Alvaro bowed his head. He knew he had made a mistake. He didn't need the old man to spell it out.

He'd spent the night in hiding, heart pounding every time he thought he heard footsteps. Every breath had been a reminder that he'd failed the one person he was sworn to protect.
