Chapter 3 - Thorny learning 2

Its been about a week since Tomo started his journey into the basics of magic. It wasn't quite like how it was portrayed in most novels he read. Mages borrowed the power of fairies to break the laws of nature by giving them energy from themselves, mana or ki being some of the names for this mystical power we call magic.

Sai was sleeping on a tiny bed as Tomo was in the garden outback, beginning a lesson under the tutelage of Elias while Chise, his apprentice and bride( oddly enough), was somewhere in Iceland with a mage called Lindel.

"So you know the basics of magic yes?" asked Elias as he was standing with an old and worn book in his hand. The language was some old tongue that Tomo did not know of and didn't have the mental capacity to care for at the moment. Learning magic was a rigorous study he was devoting all time to at the moment.

"Yes Sensei" said Tomo, giving the proper formalities to one above him. "Sensei? Nevermind, if you know the basics then we can begin an actual magic lesson" he declared as dregs of water began to converge into a water spirit. The spirit flew towards Tomo and rested on his shoulders, giving a cool and relaxing feeling.

"I want you to cast a spell to summon a small cloud of rain over the garden, just a small one" said Elias and Tomo nodded in understanding. Summoning rain was a common ritual all over the world, from the rain dances of the native Americans to the various rituals of the east to call upon mystical forces both divine and earthly.

"Is there a specific incantation?" Tomo asked him as Elias nodded and gave him the incantation to cast the rain summoning spell. 'Well, here it goes' thought Tomo as he he raised his hand, and began the process of visualizing the spell and the energy moving in his body.

He then chanted, "Tears of heavens eye, giving lord of bounties gold, oh nestled soil of giving live, blessed tears of the heavenly lady". It took some time, but the faerie was able to get the effect in place. Magic began to stir and clouds began to form out of the faeries power, and after a little, it rained a steady rain over the garden.

"Nice work for your first spell" said Elias, his praise genuine in every word. It had only been a week, but Elias has somewhat attached himself to the boy, even if he was a mere mages apprentice.

'I did it!' thought Tomo as he jumped in joy. He was finally embarking on the path of a mage, something he dreamed of since he was a child. Of course, maybe the fantastic element of it all was finally real to him now that he had concrete proof of magic in his hand, but a thought welled up inside him.

"Hey Sensei" said Tomo, getting his teachers attention. "What is it Tomo?" said Elias with familiarity. "I was wondering, do we have to use incantations? do we have to use faeries at all?" asked Tomo, the question seeming very relevant to the young mage apprentice.

Elias was thinking for a bit and Silver Lady came from the house with tea and sandwiches for the men to eat. "I suppose you don't need a fairy to cast magic, but incantations have been apart of magic since time immemorial, but faeries can do magic without them, so I guess its possible" said Elias as he took the tea and ushered Tomo to an empty seat with Silver Lady standing nearby.

"So, tell me about the world your from?" asked Elias and Tomo regailed about his supposedly normal world. "Of course though, my world apparently has mystical and supernatural elements, just hidden from normal people" Tomo said as he was nibbling on a ham sandwich. "Oh this quite good" Tomo complimented silver Lady as she smiled silently.

"So your now traveling the....multiverse to learn?" asked Elias as Tomo nodded. "Mainly to explore new worlds of course, cause having an adventure is a childhood dream of mine" Tomo got out through a mouthful of ham and bread.

"Your solution to her problem seems to be working, we have observed her health and noticed she has become healthier and stronger, even her magic has gotten a boost" said Elias with what could count as a smile.

"Good, that was the point" Tomo smiled as he thought over what Elias said about magic. Chanting and even borrowing the powers of the fae was not required, but that doesn't mean you should do it without, cause there is prices to pay.

We kept practicing for a little bit, and before you know it, the day was at its end, and Tomo was sitting on his bed contemplating.

'It seems like I should try to learn chantless magic, it seems more useful for combat. But what about the ramifications? What if I loose control of magic and it caused irreversible consequence because I abandoned a practice that was tide to it for who knows how long' he thought as Sai opened his eyes and flew towards his shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked as he seemed to peck at his feathers. "I was just thinking about magic and how I should go forward in its usage" Tomo revealed and Sai flew in front of him and stared at him in the eyes.

"Why are you thinking so hard? You shouldn't just bind yourself to one system over the other, you are special as you have access to all systems no matter how obscure" said Sai as he continued with, "Besides, you are special in that regard. Attuned to the laws of creation unlike no other, if you wanted to practice any and all systems, why not learn many and construct a system of your own? Anyway, we got business" said Sai as a golden portal appeared in the room, sparkles emitting from the gate.

"Business?" "Yes, we have someone who wants something from the vault. While it may not be all the time, it does happen. I sense those with great fates and I will send an invitation for them to enter and its your duty to do the rest, now go" said Sai as he pushed Tomo through the golden portal and followed behind.

Entering the Treasury, what Tomo saw was piles and piles of jewels, weapons of various powers in glass and metal cases. There was racks of endless clothes and dummies wearing the most powerful of armors exuding a powerful energy from its form. The entire vault itself seemed soaked to the bone in mystical energies of various types and origins, mana and ki and the like.

What drew his attention then was the someone that was waiting for him. It was a man dressed in a winged hat and wore a toga of white, sandles with wings and was carrying the staff of messengers, the caduceus. His body seemed to exude a powerful and potent divinity, and the images and clues were all put together for the owners of the Treasury.

Hermes, god of travelers and trickster. Tomo wasn't blind to his obvious divinity, yet he felt no compulsion to bow and nor even see him in reverence. Perhaps the Treasury kept him protected from the tickles of divine influence on his mind.

"Hello, may I ask your name?" asked Tomo as the young looking god gazed at him with divine eyes. "Hermes mortal, may I ask where I am?" he said, divinity lacking his voice to coax an answer, but Hermes could see it has failed. "I am.....a perveyor of strange goods to all who can seek it" said Tomo slowly. "It appears you were destined to be here, so what do you need and why?" asked Tomo and Hermes seemed to explain the story, feeling no threat from somebody who just randomly appeared on olympus without notice.

"There is a situation in the states, and my feeling led me to this place, so I assume there is something here that could get me what I need" said Hermes and Sai flew off and when he came back, a sword endowed with blue and gold, and letters of fae nature were carved onto the hallowed scabbard and the blade itself.

There was one word that Tomo had in his mind as he saw the blade. 'Beautiful' he thought as the hallowed blade lay in his hands. "This blade will be what you need, a blade forged in the heart of the planet, bringing down a titan that was said to have brought an end to the age of gods long ago in another world, the promised sword of victory: Excalibur and its scabbard, the forever sealed utopia: Avalon"

[A/N: Hey sorry if this is late. I have been tired ever since I came back from out of state and was generally trying to relax. Anyways, there wont be too long with this arc, a couple more chapters and we will move on. Of course, we will have a short pit stop in Hermes world after their whole ordeal. Hope you guys enjoy!]
