The rain beat harder as Daniel left the bridge behind. His wound stung, the knife slick in his grip. Every few steps he stumbled, catching himself on walls, pushing forward into the narrow streets. Behind him, the river roared, carrying the dripping words into the black water.

He moved through alleys tight with shadows, past doors bolted shut and windows dark. No voices called out, no light spilled from the houses. The city felt hollow, as if emptied for him alone.

His boots splashed through puddles. His breath came sharp, ragged, burning his throat. He pressed a hand to his side, but the blood kept leaking warm between his fingers. He needed shelter. He needed answers.
