Dust floated in the air like smoke after a fire. The woman stood frozen, her breath quick and shallow.
James took one more step from the broken capsule. His skin was pale, his eyes unfocused, his breath uneven.
She didn't speak.
Neither did he.
The sound of water dripping somewhere far in the tunnel filled the silence between them.
Then his voice came again, low and rough.
"Where's Daniel?"
She didn't answer. Her hand tightened around the small device in her grip.
James blinked slowly, trying to focus. The glow from the shattered glass behind him threw sharp light on his face—haunted, confused. He touched the mark on his wrist, a small scar that looked almost new.
"I asked you," he said again, "where is he?"
Her throat moved, but words wouldn't come.
