Caleb pinched Mimikyu's soft, squishy cheeks, took a few steps forward, and sat on the sofa...
"How have you been at home these days? Happy?" he asked.
Mimikyu let out two cooing sounds and nuzzled its little head against Caleb's palm.
Just then, Gardevoir emerged from the kitchen, levitating a bowl of fragrant corn congee with her psychic powers. Her expression was cold as she swept a glance over Caleb without a word. She then set the bowl down on the glass coffee table in front of him.
Caleb was caught off guard, "What's wrong with you?" he asked, puzzled.
At Caleb's words, Gardevoir's expression quickly shifted, "I'm sorry, Master," she said apologetically, "That was my other personality just now."
"…What?"
A gentle smile appeared on Gardevoir's face as she explained, "This is the special service you customized when you first ordered me!"
Caleb understood now. He frowned in thought for a couple of seconds, recalling Gardevoir's earlier expression, "Does your other personality dislike me?"
Gardevoir quickly shook her head, "Of course not! She's just too shy to face you. Actually, long before I noticed, she had already sensed your return. This corn congee was specially made by her for you!"
Caleb remembered what the customer service rep had told him when he purchased the domestic robot: "Special personalities, multiple experiences..."
"If your personality is gentle and nurturing, then what's hers?" he asked.
Gardevoir replied, "According to the settings, her personality is the Cold and Domineering Queen type!"
Caleb thought back to Gardevoir's earlier demeanor and silently agreed... it definitely fit the description.
Too exhausted to ask further, he simply picked up the bowl of corn congee and began drinking it in big gulps.
A faint blue light flickered in Gardevoir's eyes, coalescing in front of Caleb and quickly forming a holographic panel. On it appeared a chibi-style avatar of a Pokémon.
Gardevoir adjusted the panel so Caleb could see it clearly, then said, "Master, while you were away, Mimikyu participated in auto-training at the Pokémon Paradise. Her level increased from LV68 to LV70, and she learned the Dark-type move, Thief, from battling virtual machine Pokémon..."
"Hm?" Caleb raised an eyebrow and turned to look at Mimikyu, who was sitting beside him.
The next second, Mimikyu's status panel automatically popped up:
«Mimikyu»
- Level: 70
- Gender: Female
- Type: Ghost / Fairy
- Ability: Disguise
- Egg Move: Destiny Bond
- Known Moves: Scratch, Astonish, Copycat, Double Team, Wood Hammer... Mimic, Feint Attack, Shadow Sneak... Slash, Shadow Claw... Play Rough, Hone Claws, Pain Split... Swords Dance, Thief...
- Thief: Attacks while stealing the opponent's held item. If the user is already holding an item, this move fails...
Mimikyu tilted its head, its round glossy black eyes meeting Caleb's gaze. Its face practically spelled out 'Praise me!' in bold letters.
Caleb chuckled and waved his hand, exchanging some points in the shop for a few packs of highest-grade PokeBlocks, which he then placed in front of Mimikyu, "You did great!"
Instead of immediately digging in, Mimikyu glanced around, then looked up at Caleb with a questioning gaze.
Even without using his Viridian Power, Caleb understood what Mimikyu was thinking, "Don't worry, Dragonite will be back soon. And if nothing goes wrong, we'll have a new member joining our family."
Mimikyu's eyes widened slightly, a look of anticipation flashing across its face.
Caleb continued, "I'm not sure if you should call it big brother or little brother, though. You can talk to it yourself when it arrives."
Mimikyu nodded obediently, then discreetly tucked away the PokeBlocks to save them as a gift for the newcomer.
Caleb smiled and went back to finishing his congee.
After a simple lunch, he took a shower and collapsed onto the bed. Feeling clean and refreshed, he quickly fell into a deep sleep...
...
By the time he woke up again, the virtual sky of the Infinite World outside had already darkened...
The moment Caleb opened his eyes, he saw a message from Hatsumi and a friend request notification.
[Player Luna Winslow requests to add you as a friend. Accept?]
Caleb paused for a moment, then ignored it, and opened Hatsumi's message log instead:
{Haruno Hatsumi: Phew, I'm finally back! I've got all your Pokémon here. Come pick them up!}
{Haruno Hatsumi: Hey, you there? Why aren't you responding? Your Dragonite is about to wreck my shop!}
{Haruno Hatsumi: Alright, I guess you're asleep. Reply the second you wake up, thanks!}
{Caleb Chase: On my way.}
He got up, pulled on a pair of gray cotton sweatpants and a casual hoodie, perched Mimikyu on his shoulder, and teleported straight to the Entertainment District.
Before even entering the shop, Caleb could hear Hatsumi's exasperated shouts:
"You big dumb dragon! Don't touch that! Aahhh! Why are you acting like a destructive Husky?! I told you, your Trainer is asleep, but he'll come get you soon! Look at Lucario over there, behaving so well!"
Caleb: "…"
He pushed open the door and saw Dragonite sprawled across the dining table, its claws gripping the edges tightly as Hatsumi tried in vain to pull it off.
Meanwhile, Lucario stood silently in the corner, half-shrouded in shadow, observing everything with quiet vigilance.
"Wuuuu!"
Dragonite was the first to notice Caleb.
Its large teal eyes glistened with moisture as it flapped its wings, launching itself off the table and rushing over to him. It wrapped its arms around Caleb in an affectionate hug, then grabbed Mimikyu off his shoulder and began rubbing its chubby face against the smaller Pokémon's head.
Mimikyu's head lolled to the side, its expression one of utter resignation.
"What's gotten into you?" Caleb asked, eyeing Dragonite's unusually dramatic behavior.
Hatsumi who was busy cleaning up the dishes that Dragonite had knocked over snorted, "Probably thought you abandoned it. It even threw a whole tantrum out of sadness."
Caleb: "…"
He looked up at Dragonite and raised an eyebrow, "Seriously?"
"Wuuu…" Dragonite whined pitifully.
Caleb sighed and reached up to squish the big oaf's chubby cheeks, "At least keep up your cool big brother image. If you keep this up, your reputation is gonna be ruined."
Dragonite leaned into the cheek-squishing, letting out a muffled contented rumble.
Once Dragonite's wounded heart was sufficiently soothed, Caleb turned to Lucario, who was still standing in the corner, and beckoned, "Come here. Let me introduce you to a new teammate."
Lucario stepped out of the shadows in silence, stopping beside Dragonite.
Caleb rescued Mimikyu from Dragonite's grasp and asked, "Want to introduce yourself?"
