Chapter 4 - Fall to Rise

Lyra's pov

The room were the main mating ritual was meant to take place was a lowly lit room with several candles I had dedicatedly lighted. The room was beautifully decorated and I was honestly suprised we had pulled it off just in time.

I felt something stir within me as pain seared in my head. I dropped my head into my palm and groaned in pain.

"What is wrong with you?" Mava's voice pierced through to me.

"I don't think I'm feeling so good." I muttered as pain seared through me.

"You do smell a little off." Mava comments as she assessed me.

"Go out through the kitchen and get some air, there's still a little time before the ceremony begins. I want you back here on time, don't think you can use a headache to escape work." She told me and I gratefully walked out of the hall and followed the back door which led right out the pack house.

I sucked in a healthy amount of air as the cool breeze caressed my face but that didn't make me feel any better. What was happening to me?

A searing pain went through me and I almost doubled over right there on the pavement. I clutched the wall for support as I groaned out in pain. Many omega's who passed turned as stared at me sceptically. Some scrunched their noses and I could tell it was at my scent. How was my scent changing?

A low heat pooled in my chest and I clutched my chest with my hands, hoping to ease the pain but to no avail. Something stirred within me again and I had the sudden urge to transform into my wolf, something I hadn't done in a long time. Why now? Why had my wolf which had once been dormant now awakened and reeking havoc within me. My wolf fought with me for control but I pushed it down.

The last thing I wanted was to act out of sorts and do something that would ruin the alpha's ceremony and inadvertently place me in the line of his wrath.

"Lyra are you okay?" One of the omega's stopped and asked with a puzzled expression.

"I'm fine, I just need a little air." I gave her a tight smile.

"Your smell is umm...off." she scratched her neck, almost embarrassed as she spoke.

"Yeah, I don't know why." I shrugged.

"Mava said you need to come back now before Alpha Erik enters into the hall and the ceremony begins." The girl informed me and I nodded.

"I'll be there in a minute." I replied and she nodded mutely, giving me a weary glance before she stepped back into the pack house.

I had to get my wolf under control before I stepped back in there. The best possible way to do that was to release her and go on a run but I didn't have that time right now nor the luxury to do as I wanted unless I was ready to face Mava's wrath. I closed my eyes and tried to connect to my wolf but for some reason she seemed restless.

She began nudging me back into the pack house and my headache had slightly subsided so I decided to chance it. If I wasted any more time outside, Mava would no doubt come to get me herself, especially since she thought this was all a ploy to get out of work.

As I lethargically made my way back into the pack house, my wolf seemed a little more settled and I quickened my steps. The wolves who lingered outside the hall turned as I passed and I couldn't help but wonder if it was my scent that drew their attention to me.

I made my way into the hall, ignoring the stares I was receiving and resumed my place beside the other omega's at the far end of the room.

I could feel the heat of Mava's eyes on me but I dared not look in her direction as I was already struggling to keep my wolf under control.

"Where have you been?" Mava gripped my hand in an iron steel grip and I almost cried out in pain.

"I was getting some air just like you advised." I responded and her eyes turned to slits.

"So you are a little liar now Lyra?" She sneered at me and I was at a loss as well as clueless about what she was talking about.

"Why do you smell like Alpha Erik?" She asked and I saw a few omega's discreetly staring at us curiously.

"What? That's not possible." I whispered and this time I couldn't smother back my cry as her nails dug into my hands.

"Why do you think everyone is looking at you? You reek of the Alpha and no one needs to guess what you were doing out there." Mava informed me and I was speechless. I gaped at her as I scrambled for words...anything that would prove my innocence to her but my mind blanked.

My wolf perked up and I knew the instant Alpha Erik walked into the hall, my whole being lighted up.

He looked handsome clad in his black and white tux with his hair neatly styled to the back. My heart beat loudly in my chest as I became more aware of him than I had ever been before, it was no wonder women eagerly fell at his feet.

He slowly walked into the hall but stopped short right in the middle of the room. He lifted his head and sniffed and the whole room became silent. Alpha Erik's eyes slowly surveyed the room and our eyes clashed and held.

He turned and walked in my direction as all the other omega's shrunk back. My wolf yelped within me as he approached and I stared at him in confusion.

"Mate." He whispered softly, only loud enough for me to here and my heart stopped.
