Chapter 2 - Small Bet

Back in the dormitory, Carlotta looked at the Rose Thorn in her hand, which was like a work of art, and felt a sense of joy in her heart.

Although she was pursuing a path of magic rather than knighthood, and thus had no use for this alchemical tool, selling it would still bring her a considerable amount of money.

Based on her recent understanding, such an alchemical tool could fetch around 5, 000 Orrae.

After placing the Rose Thorn safely in her dormitory, Carlotta picked up the two cards on her bedside table.

She was learning a relatively common form of card magic, which required cards as a medium to cast spells.

The two cards she is currently confronted to heating and cooling.

The heating card can be used to warm food, which is its most common application, and it can also make the bed warm during winter.

The cooling card can release cold air in a specific area, which was very popular in summer as it can dispel the heat.

She would probably use these two cards in her magic class later... Wait, no!

Carlotta suddenly remembered something and quickly summoned the system to check.

Earlier, she had been so excited after seeing the information about the Rose Thorn that she had run out without carefully examining the other details.

Now, her gaze fell on the fifth piece of information, and she couldn't help but ponder.

Could it be that today's class would be replaced with a magic exam?

The information included the test questions prepared by Professor Estelle Marlowe. Seeing this, Carlotta immediately went to her desk, opened her book, and reviewed the relevant content.

"Types of magic..."

"The uniqueness of magic..."

"Categories of card magic..."

Carlotta read for a while, and her brain began to ache slightly. By the time she came to her senses, an hour had already passed.

After memorizing the knowledge that might be needed for the test, Carlotta felt her stomach growling.

She closed the book, got up, and left the dormitory, quickening her pace as she headed to the cafeteria.

The cafeteria wasn't far from the dormitory, and there were quite a few students there at this time.

Carlotta, following the hints from the information, avoid the caramel bread, even though the cafeteria staff strongly recommends it. Instead, she chose a ham sandwich and a glass of milk.

As a student personally arranged by the academy's head, Viviana Richards, Carlotta didn't have to pay the high tuition fees, but she still had to cover her daily food expenses, which cost around 50 Orrae per day.

Carrying her breakfast, Carlotta looked around the cafeteria and found a relatively lively spot to sit.

As a transmigrated person, Carlotta knew very little about this world, so she always chose to sit in crowded areas during meals to listen to others' conversations and increase her understanding.

Although she had inherited the memories of the original Carlotta, the daughter of a bankrupt merchant, the knowledge she had was very limited, especially regarding supernatural matters. Carlotta, as an ordinary person, knew very little about such things.

By the time she was almost done with her ham sandwich, Carlotta had also learned what the students around her were talking about.

Their conversation revolved around two first-year students who were the talk of the academy.

One was Soren Carlisle, from the Carlisle Viscount family, and the other was Amelia Fenwick, from the Fenwick Viscount family.

Due to their family background and outstanding looks, they had become well-known figures in the academy shortly after enrolling.

Everyone could say something about these two noble ladies.

Carlotta thought that family background must play a significant role because, although she was also quite cute, she hadn't become a notable figure at all.

Due to the strained relationship between their families, Soren and Amelia had been at odds in the academy.

Yesterday, after their relationship deteriorated to a certain point, they went to the academy's dueling arena for a duel.

This had caught the attention of the academy, especially the first-year students, but the duel was not open to the public, and no one knew the outcome yet.

Carlotta couldn't help but glanced at today's information. She already knew the result of the duel.

"Let's make a small bet on who will win. As far as I know, the two ladies will soon announce the result of the duel," someone suggested.

The person who made the suggestion was a girl named Avery Clarke, whom Carlotta remembered as her classmate.

Avery was also the daughter of a merchant, but unlike Carlotta's tragic circumstances, Avery's parents were alive and well.

The Clarke family business had a certain influence in the capital of Kestholm, providing Avery with a very comfortable life. As a result, she had good relationships with many nobles.

Perhaps due to her merchant family background, Avery never missed an opportunity to make money.

She immediately set up a betting pool, and as long as enough people placed bets, she will make money regardless of who wins the duel.

Many people were curious about this and quickly went to place their bets.

Stacks of Orrae quickly piled up on the table in front of Avery.

Orren were a type of paper currency with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100.

Carlotta couldn't help but walk over, almost wanting to bet all her savings on Amelia winning.

However, after some thought, she decided to avoid drawing too much attention and only placed a bet of 1, 000 Orrae on Amelia's victory.

A bet of 1,000 Orrae wasn't particularly noticeable among the many bets, as the students at Caerwyn Academy often came from wealthy families and were quite generous.

Perhaps they also harbored the hope that the noble lady they supported might notice them.

After finishing her breakfast, Carlotta left the cafeteria.

Caerwyn Academy offers courses in the three paths of the supernatural: magic, knighthood, and alchemy.

Among these, the magic courses alone had over twenty classes for the first year. The card magic that Carlotta was learning, due to its high applicability and ease of mastery, had the most students, with three dedicated classrooms for teaching card magic.

These three classes were called Card Magic Class One, Card Magic Class Two, and Card Magic Class Three.

Carlotta was a student of Card Magic Class Two.

The classroom was spacious, similar to the classrooms in her previous life, but with a strong fantasy style.

Carlotta had just taken her seat when the other students began to arrive.

When it was time for class, Professor Estelle Marlowe, a stern-looking woman dressed in black and gray formal attire, entered the classroom.

"Let's put today's lesson aside and start with a test. Avery, distribute the test papers to everyone," Estelle said.

As soon as she finished speaking, the classroom was filled with groans. It seemed that students from any world didn't particularly enjoy exams.

Only Carlotta couldn't help but smile.
