Chapter 1 - 1: Betrayed

Sue's pov

"I cannot get married to you anymore, Sue."

My fiancé and the love of my life, Chris suddenly blurted out after pulling away when I tried to kiss him.

"What?" I whispered, mouth hanging open as I slowly pulled away, my heartbeat starting to accelerate.

Chris shrugged almost carelessly before pocketing his hands.

"Don't make this harder than it's supposed to be, Sue. I just can't. Turns out, you're not what I need, nor can you give me what I want." He continued, lips thinned and I let out a choked sound, unable to believe my ears.

"You can't be serious, Chris. Our wedding is in three days!" I cried out, watching as he shrugged again.

"That's not a problem, because a wedding is still gonna be holding. I just won't be getting married to you on that day." He continued and I blinked slowly, feeling beyond confused.

"What do you mean?"

"I'll be getting married to your younger sister instead." He announced and my mouth dropped open for the second time tonight.

"What?!" I screeched loudly as a wave of pain and disbelief consumed me. I couldn't believe my ears right now.

"My sister? And she agreed?!" I demanded and my fiance hummed while nodding.

"Of course she did. We've been together for a while after all." He offered, shocking me further and I stumbled from shock this time.

He wasn't making any sense to me. My sister and I were practically best friends. This is the last thing she'd ever do to me.

However, after I stormed off to find my sister, I met her speaking with our parents.

"Is it true? You're getting married to my fiance? You planned on taking my spot this whole time?" I questioned, not bothering to beat around the bush.

My younger sister had flawless skin, and a flawless beauty. She was perfect in every aspect, and she also had a wolf unlike me.

"I guess the cat's out of the bag now." She shrugged as she drawled and I did a double take, mouth gaping.

"That's what I wanted to talk to you about tonight, honey." My mother's voice pulled me out of my shocked trance.

"You knew about this?" I whispered as I turned around to stare at my mother, breath bated. My mother rolled her eyes as if bored.

"Of course I did." She responded briskly and my mouth wobbled slightly but no word came out.

"What is… I don't understand…" I managed to wheeze, my heart racing fast. My sister regarded me pitifully and that look made my skin crawl because I detest being pitied, it was why I was still keeping everything together even though I was completely breaking down on the inside.

"It's simple, sweet child. You're not fit to become the Luna of this pack, your younger sister is. You're wolfless, remember? You're also a hybrid, and all of that makes you barren. If you get crowned luna, the throne won't get an heir and that's just gonna be an unnecessary burden in the future, so it's best that it's prevented. I'm certain you're aware your younger sister would make a better Luna than you." She paused and pointed at my younger sister.

"She is loved and respected by everyone, and Chris loves her as well."

As my mother spoke, all I could do was gape at her in shock and bewilderment.

I trained my whole life to be Luna. Even though I was wolfless and a freak hybrid, I made up for that by learning how to fight martially. I spent my entire life working towards taking over the Luna throne after my mother, only for me to be told this right now.

"What do you mean by Chris loving Mia?" I asked when I could find my voice and this time, my father responded. I didn't even realize when he came in.

"Chris was initially interested in your younger sister. Even though he was your mate, he instantly wanted to reject you like your past three mates had, but because each time you got rejected, it brought shame to the family and the throne. I then decided to offer Chris some money and asked him to accept you for the time being."

This time, my heart completely shattered.

As I gaped at my parents, I suddenly wasn't sure I recognized them any longer.

Everything I believed was slowly turning out to be a lie. I had been extremely happy and relieved when Chris accepted me as his mate two years ago, because I had initially expected him to reject me like my last three mates instantly had. But he hadn't, and I had been the happiest girl alive and that single act made the side talks surrounding me to reduce drastically.

Right now, after finding out that all of that had been a lie, I couldn't imagine how the people of this pack would treat me after finding out that Chris would be getting married to my sister instead of me in three days. The people of Starlight pack were ruthless when preying on the weak, they mocked me my whole life for being different from them, and even though I had long tuned their opinions out, that didn't stop it from stinging every now and then.

"I can't believe this. Why did you do this? How could you do this to me? Do you realize how stupid I'd look to the pack members?" I whispered after long minutes. My sister was leaning against my mother and she didn't even look remorseful.

"You'll live, child. You're strong after all." My mother said convincingly and I let out a scoff and a dry laugh.

"You've all ruined my life." I said to the theee of them, voice thankfully steady and not giving anything away.

"Your life isn't ruined, child. We did all of this for you and in time, you'll understand." My father gruffed out and I scoffed again before turning around to leave their presence before I lost control of my emotions and burst into tears.

"Please get Chris to officially reject you, sister, so the bond between you two can be severed." My sister called out but I didn't bother responding.

After facing a humiliating rejection that night because Chris chose to carry out the rejection in the presence of his friends despite how much I tried convincing him to accompany me to a private room, I realized one more cold truth.

Chris never loved me like I stupidly believed. Not even for a second.

That night, as I laid in my cold bed, with the pillows muffling every sound, I cried myself to sleep.
