c83: Xuan Is a Handsome Guy
In fact, with Uchiha Shisui's prowess, he could easily serve not just as an ANBU squad leader, but even ANBU Captain. He's even qualified for ANBU Commander—in terms of sheer ability. But to become deputy commander or commander requires broader considerations: political skill, seniority, clan relations, mission results… It's a multi-faceted game.
Still, Shisui as squad leader is beyond dispute. His status as Minato's disciple commands respect, so no one dares challenge him.
Credit where it's due: although Minato's reign was brief, his appointments brought a fresh and thriving atmosphere to Konoha!
Now that a new squad was formed, Gen Uchiha decided to host a celebratory gathering his special way to mark the occasion with the three teammates.
The four of them went grocery-shopping together, then prepared the meal. Gen handled the hot-pot broth after all, the three girls had never worked with a portable stove.
That night, they convened in Gen's backyard. The yard was modest: a garden of withered lotus on the left, a snow-dappled pool on the right.
This was the coldest month of winter, yet the wintersweet in the left corner was blooming, its elegant fragrance floating through the air. A stand of green bamboo bent in the breeze, sending snow swirling and highlighting its rare emerald hue in deep frost.
On the wooden porch ran a long table, its four seat-cushions arranged with care. In the center bubbled a steaming hot-pot white steam rising amid aromatic warmth. Surrounding it were bowls of sliced meats, winter vegetables, tofu, dipping sauces, chopsticks, and drinks. The scene was festive, despite its simple elegance.
Gen and Anko sat on one side; Kurenai and Yugao on the other. Cross-legged and relaxed, they dipped their favorite meats into the hot-pot, savoring every bite. Their eyes lit with satisfaction.
"This is delicious, it rivals yakiniku," Anko murmured, her eyes half-lidded with pleasure as she chewed a tender rib.
"Delicious, truly," Yugao agreed, her voice soft.
"Especially on a snowy night with warmth like this, it feels like heaven," Kurenai said, smiling at Gen. "You really know how to create this atmosphere, Xuan."
"It's not because I'm from a wealthy family," Gen replied. "It's because life's too short not to be romantic."
He picked up a large piece of mutton and dipped it in broth, smiling.
"We ninjas face life-and-death every day we owe it to ourselves to savor moments like this," Gen said softly, lifting his cup of warm milk.
The three women nodded, recognizing the truth there even if their backgrounds differed, they understood the value of savoring joy under harsh conditions.
"Can we take A‑rank missions with you?" Yugao asked, voice hopeful.
Yugao's family on her own for so long needed her to succeed quickly to support her mother.
"Maybe but we should build teamwork first," Gen replied. "A missions are extremely dangerous."
"Absolutely," Anko agreed, nodding mid‑bite.
"Better to execute more B‑ and C‑rank missions until our coordination improves," Kurenai advised.
"I'm so impatient," Yugao admitted, smiling wryly. A‑rank missions meant serious risk for Gen as well as them.
Gen's gaze softened. "Normally, if I'm not leading... one of you will speak on behalf of the others."
"I think Kurenai should do it," he said. "She's older, chūnin, mature. Any objections?"
"No objections," Kurenai replied firmly.
"Yeah, makes sense," Anko said around a mouthful of broth.
The women understood: Kurenai's chūnin rank and reputation made her the natural voice of the team.
Gen was about to serve more broth when he abruptly paused, chopsticks halfway to the pot.
Memories raced through his mind: he had changed the destinies of these three. If anything went wrong...
He'd feel guilt beyond measure.
Kurenai saw his pause. "Is something wrong?"
Anko and Yugao leaned in curiously as well.
Gen put his chopsticks down and exhaled. "As your leader, teammate, and friend, I am responsible for your safety."
"If everything is fine... but if something happens after we form this squad... how would I face you?"
"How could I live with that guilt?"
"So I've prepared a life-saving trump card."
The women leaned forward, eyes shining.
"A powerful jutsu?"
Gen smiled. "No—it's not a jutsu at all. It's a genjutsu sealed within your eyes."
"In your eyes?"
"Look at mine."
His Sharingan now fully awakened with three tomoe flickered. The tomoe spun, casting a gentle crimson glow over them. The three kunoichi stared transfixed, eyes dilated in fascination and surprise...
Transfer Seal
A forbidden sealing jutsu used to store techniques within the Sharingan itself triggered under specific conditions. It can be stored in your own eyes or someone else's. When conditions are met, it automatically activates.
Madara once fled Konoha with many Uchiha secrets… but most were backed up. The transfer seal survived, passed down to Gen when Orochimaru gave him the Uchiha scrolls during Gen's appointment as jōnin candidate.
"Good." Gen then snapped his fingers and broke the genjutsu.
The women blinked, recovering.
"Feel anything different?"
"No," came the chorus.
"Well, this seal contains three A‑rank genjutsu: Kurenai, yours is a visual darkness illusion—l, it completely darkens the target's vision."
"Anko, yours is Shiranui a fire release illusion that makes the enemy feel they're burning alive."
"Yugao, yours is the Obstacle Illusion weaves bindings trapping your enemy within illusions."
"All are sealed in your eyes, to trigger instantly under two conditions—no casting required."
The women absorbed the news in stunned silence. Three elite A‑rank illusions sealed in their eyes. Generosity of the highest order for their safety.
"Of course, chakra cost is high. You owe me a reward."
Gen's eyes returned to normal, and his voice became playful. "What reward?"
Yugao, the most moved, spoke up. "We can't... we'll do anything."
Gen smiled. "Simple take turns feeding me during this meal."
They blinked, then grinned.
"A small request... but well deserved."
"What's the trigger condition?" Anko asked.
"First: make eye contact with your target."
"Second: shout or mentally think'Xuan is a handsome guy!'"
The women opened their eyes wide in unison.
"Huh?"
"But without these, nothing happens," Gen said, serious. "You just have that seal in your eyes."
They exchanged glances awkward but amused.
"Handsome!" they chorused, softer than expected.
Gen nodded solemnly. "Then we're done."
They resumed eating. The broth warmed them; bamboo and wintersweet faded into quiet background beauty.
Anko, cheeks flushed, used her chopsticks to pick up a piece of mutton and place it gently in Gen's mouth.
Rule fulfilled.
He swallowed and chewed, pleased. Perhaps next came sleeping under the same quilt? But not tonight.
The corridor overhead dimmed with lantern light, so no one noticed beyond a glance.
They enjoyed the meal, cordial and warm. Gen only regretted that the moment passed too soonthere was still such chemistry between them.
At nine, the women helped clean up, then departed together—leaving Gen to wonder what tomorrow's training would bring.
