How?

The question echoed in my head, hollow and unreal, like something spoken underwater. I stared at Cedric, waiting for him to take it back, to say he'd made a mistake, that the man outside the doors was only injured, unconscious, anything but dead.

But Cedric didn't look away. His gaze didn't falter. The warriors behind him wore the same grim expression. None of the men looked like they had any information to counter the News of Kael's death.

Kael's death. Just like that.

My knees weakened, and if not for the pillar beside me, I might have collapsed again. My fingers curled into the cold stone as I struggled to breathe past the sudden weight crushing my chest.

How did Kael end up dead? And why?

Kael had been in perfect health only minutes ago, just before Declan had insisted that he went outside with the other pack members.

A quiet force that made me feel anything but alone even though I've only known him for a few minutes.
