This "someone else" was actually Sebatide Hughes. Sixteen centuries into the future, Roy learned spells by studying Orenna's Magic Manual, and thereby encountered the Devil imprisoned in the "cage" plane, bargaining to acquire the technique of Transformation.
"I see." Kara smiled faintly, her fingers stroking Roy's tense jaw, exerting slight pressure. "What to do? You peeked at something forbidden; you should disappear. But I'm very interested in your spell..."
The red line around Roy's throat grew increasingly hot.
As if one careless move would sever her neck.
