Rael took a deep breath before nodding his head and motioning for me to come closer.
Without waiting any longer, I walked over and climbed onto the boulder, settling right beside him. He was usually so expressive, his emotions easy to read, but when he grew quiet and serious like this, there was something about him that felt even more captivating.
Still, I liked it better when he talked more, because when he stayed silent like this, I never knew what to say.
I pulled my knees up against my chest and rested my chin on them, tilting my head slightly so I could glance at him from the corner of my eye.
The only sounds around us were the chirp of crickets and the soft flicker of fireflies floating in the dark. Together, they wrapped the night in a calm silence that somehow made my heart feel lighter.
