Chapter 242 - minato 240

The grand hall of the Daimyo's castle had been transformed into a tense sanctuary.

Heavy velvet curtains were drawn shut, and the once-luxurious room now felt suffocating under the weight of fear.

Nobles in fine silk robes, wealthy merchants with their jeweled rings, and other influential figures of the Fire Country huddled in small groups.

Their faces were pale, voices low and urgent. The distant rumble of explosions and the clash of jutsu from the outer walls occasionally shook the floor, reminding everyone that the capital was under siege.

Guards in dark armor stood at every entrance, their expressions grim but professional. They had assured the gathered elites that the Royal Army was handling the attackers and that nothing would happen to them here.

But the assurances rang hollow. Who would dare strike at the heart of the capital? The very idea had everyone on edge.

In one corner, Cha Hae-In sat curled in her mother's lap like a frightened child. Her blonde hair spilled over her mother's shoulder as she hugged her tightly, seeking warmth and comfort.

The chaos outside had stripped away her usual composure. She was scared — truly scared — and for once, she didn't care who saw it.

Her betrothed, the fat son of the Daimyo, paced nearby like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum.

His round face was flushed red, and he muttered angrily under his breath.

"Until when do I have to wait?" he complained loudly, kicking at a nearby cushion. "They said they'd deal with these attackers soon, but it's been hours! I'm the son of the Daimyo — I shouldn't be hiding like some commoner!"

Cha Hae-In kept her face buried against her mother's chest, but she could feel the eyes of the room occasionally flick toward him.

Normally, such behavior would have drawn stares of disgust or amusement. Tonight, no one cared. Survival was all that mattered.

Her mother stroked her hair gently, the familiar rhythm soothing Cha's frayed nerves.

"Everything will be alright, my child," her mother whispered.

Cha nestled deeper into the embrace. "I'm scared, Mother."

"You shouldn't worry so much," her mother said with a small, teasing smile. "You know swordsmanship. If any attackers come near, you can just defeat them yourself."

Cha pulled back slightly, annoyed. "Mother, this is not the time for teasing."

Her mother's smile softened into something warmer. It had been a long time since Cha had clung to her like this — like a little girl seeking safety.

In this moment of crisis, the bond between them felt precious.

Cha's father sat a short distance away, lost in thought. His eyes were distant, calculating. She knew that look well. He wasn't thinking about their safety — he was weighing opportunities.

How could this chaos be turned to their family's advantage? What alliances could be forged if the Daimyo fell? Cha felt a familiar chill at his cold pragmatism.

There had never been much paternal warmth between them.

A nobleman nearby grew impatient and snapped at one of the guards.

"Hey! What is going on out there? We already know the capital is attacked. How long do we have to wait here like prisoners?"

The guard remained stoic. "We are here to protect you, my lord. We don't have updates on the situation outside."

The nobleman's face reddened with frustration, but he fell silent. Everyone knew the truth — the guards were as blind as they were.

Time dragged on.

The nervousness thickened in the air like smoke.

Whispers grew louder.

Some nobles clutched hidden daggers. Merchants muttered about lost goods and ruined trade routes. The fire from the earlier explosion still cast an orange glow through the high windows.

Cha had dozed off in her mother's arms, lulled by the warmth and the steady stroking of her hair. When a hand shook her shoulder gently, she startled awake.

It was her betrothed — the fat son. His eyes were fixed on her with a mixture of concern and something darker.

"My lady," he said, trying to sound gentle. "If you want to sleep, you can use the bed in the special room. It's reserved only for me as the son of the Daimyo. It would be much more comfortable there."

Cha hugged her mother tighter, refusing. "No. I don't want to."

"It will be even more comfortable," he insisted, reaching for her hand.

"No!" she said again, like a stubborn child refusing to leave her mother's side.

Before he could argue further, her father's cold voice cut in.

"Cha. You should listen to your husband. It is a lady's role."

Cha felt a flicker of resentment. There was no love in those words — only command. She knew she had no choice.

With a quiet sigh, she stood, smoothing her dress. Her betrothed looked pleased. Her mother gave her a small, understanding nod.

The room he led her to was not far — just a turn down a private corridor. Cha expected luxury, but it was surprisingly plain.

A simple large bed, a few wooden furnishings, and a small window overlooking the inner courtyard. No grand decorations. Just functional.

She stepped inside and turned to him.

"Thank you, my lord, for bringing me here."

"You don't have to thank me," he said, stepping closer. His intentions were obvious in the way his eyes lingered on her body. "It is my role as your husband."

Cha's heart began to race. She knew this man. She had felt his wandering hands before — the harassment in the shop, the way he looked at her like property.

Alone with him now, in this room, she could feel the danger.

He moved even closer, his voice low. "You're even more beautiful now that I look at you properly. These blonde hairs… so soft." His fingers brushed through her hair, then trailed down to her waist, feeling the curve of her body through the fabric.

He licked his lips.

Cha's body trembled, but she forced herself to stay calm. She had read books — ancient texts on court intrigue and the art of manipulation.

Women had always used their beauty and charm as weapons when direct power was denied to them.

She could do the same.

Instead of pushing him away, she stepped forward and hugged him.

Her body pressed fully against his — soft curves against his round frame, the warmth of her skin seeping through their clothes.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered against his ear, her voice small and scared.

"I'm so scared, my lord… I'm so scared."

The fat son stiffened in surprise. He had expected resistance or coldness. Instead, he felt her trembling body against him — not in rejection, but in genuine fear.

Her hug was warm, comforting in a way he had never experienced. The prostitutes he had bedded before had been transactional, empty.

This… this felt real. Human. His lust was still there — he could feel it stirring — but something else stirred too.

Pity.

A strange protectiveness.

He hugged her back awkwardly, his hands resting on her waist, feeling every curve. For a moment, he forgot his crude intentions.

"Don't worry," he said, his voice softer than usual. "There's nothing the Royal Army can't handle. Just breathe. We'll be alright."

Cha stayed in the hug, pressing closer, letting her body do the work. She could feel his heartbeat quicken, but also the way his grip changed — less greedy, more… hesitant.

She was manipulating him, using her beauty and the vulnerability she projected to disarm him. She had read how men could be swayed by a woman's touch when they expected coldness.

It was working.

She pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, her own wide and pleading.

"Do you think we'll be alright?" she asked softly.

He stared at her, his earlier lust warring with the unexpected emotion she had stirred. His hands still rested on her hips, but he didn't push further.

"We'll be alright," he said again, though his voice lacked its usual arrogance.

Outside, another distant explosion rumbled through the castle. The fire from the earlier blast still cast flickering shadows.

Cha stayed in his arms, continuing her careful manipulation — whispering fears, pressing her body just enough to keep him distracted from his baser urges.

She wasn't safe yet. But for now, she had bought herself time.
