Chapter 18 - Red hair

("The most powerful of Aldenburg's noble families. I never payed much thought into it, but the more I remember, many of them had silver hair and blue eyes.") Firion pondered.

Is it possible...but they do not appear to have any other deva traits, but the silver hair and cobalt eyes are unique, and growing up he did not have much direct interaction with them.

It was not until after he joined the Lustrodos army that he first met the Winterheart ducal, who contributed most of the army's military funds.

Duke Alfore is the name of patriarch who controls the Winterheart name, but Firion remembered the brief interaction with them at a garden party, all of his children had silver hair that are reminiscent of the blue horns, but Alfore had blond hair and hazel eyes and his wife never appeared at any of the local gatherings.

("According to rumors I heard from other soldiers, Alfore's wife suffers from heat spells often and that is why she never appeared at social events. But none of them ever saw her either.") this lingered in Firion's thoughts.

But it was not just his family! The Moonspeaker family that owns several farms that provided most of the nations produce, Firion recalled how the duchess of the family was also silver haired, but her eyes were green.

As he was recounting his memories Kaida was busy cooking breakfast for them, and as she cooked she tried to remember all she could about her mother and the culture of her tribe.

But as the young deva stirred the oatmeal, she tried thinking about every conversation, trying to remember every little bit of information her mother ever shared with her.

Then, in the midst of her thoughts, she remembered, ("That is what I was forgetting...my father!")

"Actually Firion I do remember something my told me! She told me my red hair came from my dad!" she said as she kept stirring their breakfast.

"So your father had red hair? (I have never seen a blue horn besides Kaida with red hair, is it a recessive trait?) Was there anything else your mother told you about your father Kaida?" he pressed further.

As she moved hot oatmeal from the flame she started to gradually remember some ominous things her mother told her.

"My mother...she was suppose to marry someone else...but she did not love that person...she loved my father...but my mother was special...so she and my father ran away. Mother told me she was already pregnant with me when they fled, and my father got killed before she came here. She settled down in this forest because it was secluded." she explained.

Firion then popped another question, "Kaida, did your mom ever tell you about who she was suppose to marry?"

She spoke some more, "My mother told me she did not like that person, and she fell in love with my father first, but he was a from a lower caste, but I do not recall anything else."

She mixed honey into the oat and took a bite.

"Hmmm...this oatmeal tastes wonderful Firion!" she beamed as she offered him a spoonful!

He closed his mouth around the spoon and sweet taste of honey gently complimented the taste of the creamy humble grains. It was delicious!

"The deer milk really does bring out the flavor of the oatmeal Kaida! Did your mother also teach you these recipes?" he carefully asked.

"Yes she did, mother told me that eating meat is not necessary for us. So I guess the blue horns in Mycean must also follow the same diet." she replied

While it provided more information Firion could neither recall if the elves from the noble families consumed meat, he really did not pay attention to that detail.

"Whats on your mind Firion? After you read the deva book I can tell your stressed about something?" she asked calmly as she handed a bowl.

"I am just wondering if the elves in my country did not already have established connections with the blue horn devas of Mycean. I am now remembering things that seem strange." he said this as he carefully took a bite of his food.

While it could just be a coincidence, something about Aldenburg and Mycean's supposed tense relations felt off, and this uncertainty was without a doubt tied to his childhood trauma. And why do the elves of Aldenburg describe the devas as demons?

Surely something must have happened for them to be labeled as such, and why didn't the blue horns just communicate with elves? These revelations do not add up.

After breakfast Firion and Kaida headed outside with a few clay gourds. They were gonna milk deer together.

"Hopefully the deer don't flee from me like time." the large elf said with annoyance.

Kaida held his hand and nuzzled him, "They just need to get use to you first!" she smiled.

"Actually Firion...do you think...that maybe we should start thinking about leaving this forest?" she suddenly asked.

The elf paused as if he knew his wife has been reading his thoughts the entire time.

He spoke and relayed his concerns, "Your right Kaida, I do think we should leave this place. But I do not believe its safe to go back to Aldenburg, I was thinking we should head south to Eurelca."

"Eurelca? That is the other elf country you told me about. But will they accept a deva like me?" her voice sounded concerned.

However Firion has heard on more than one occasion that Eurelca has deva citizens living amongst its elf populations, but their relations with Aldenburg are not the best, despite being sister elf nations. Not to mention it is prohibited to mention such customs.

Just as he was gonna respond back Kaida stopped dead in her tracks and had a horrified expression all of sudden.

"Hm? Kaida? Whats wrong?" he asked.

She nervously began to shake.

"Firion...we are not alone. I can sense something...there are people near by...but I am sensing malicious emotions!" she described nervously.

A cold chill ran down Firion's spine, he knew exactly who it could be.

"Quick Kaida! Let us hide!"
