"T-thank you for saving me…" Cassian's little sister spoke hesitantly, trailing behind me along the corridor.
I didn't respond. I had no intention of accepting her gratitude.
I didn't help her out of pity or some noble sense of heroism. I only intervened because I didn't want Cassian to tear the palace down. That would ruin everything I'd been working toward.
And another part of it? To rattle the nest of vipers.
Even though she could tell I was ignoring her, she still clung close. She'd already chosen me as her lifeline, and letting go of me now meant crawling back to that pit of snakes. That would be worse than death.
"You're… friends with my brother, right?" She shyly asked again. "He talked a lot about you."
Judging from her demeanor, she must have been married off to Verelen before Davina invaded Hegadon. I couldn't help but wonder what Cassian had told her about me.
"Do I seem like the person he described?" I asked, unable to resist.
